GENERAL SOCCER RULES
Basic Game Procedures
-
Games will consist of two 12-minute halves with a 2-minute break in between. The clock will run continuously.
-
There will be no time-outs permitted. The clock will only be stopped when there is an extensive injury. The referee can also stop the clock, as he/she deems necessary.
-
If the game is tied after regulation, we will have a 3-minute sudden death overtime period.
-
If the game still remains tied a shoot out will take place. Four representatives from each team will participate in the shootout (they must be on the field at the conclusion of the overtime period). If the game is still tied a sudden death shootout will take place.
Players Each team will be able to play with a maximum of six players and a minimum of four players.
-
Once started, a game will be completed even if the number of players a team has on the field drops below the minimum of four (because of red cards, injury, etc.)
Goalies
-
No punts or drop kicks will be permitted by goalkeepers. They must throw the ball in or kick it when it is rested on the ground.
-
If a person passes the ball back to the goalie the goalie is not permitted to pick up the ball. If the goalie touches it with his hands, it will be considered a handball in the box, which will result in a penalty kick.
-
The goalkeeper will not be allowed to hold the ball for more than 10 seconds before releasing it.
Equipment
Eligibility Students, faculty, and staff of JCU are eligible to play.
-
Current members of the John Carroll University soccer teams are not eligible to play. A team is allowed to have up to 2 ex-collegiate soccer players.
Substitutions
-
Substitutions can be made when the ball is dead.
Out of Bounds
Infractions Offside infractions will not be called. Each player is allowed to be in any location on the field at any time.
-
No obstructing of the goalkeeper will be permitted.
-
Slide tackling will be permitted, but not from behind.
-
All infractions will result in a direct kick. On a direct kick, no defender should be within seven yards of the ball.
-
For all rules not mentioned here, Ohio high school soccer rules will apply.
Red and Yellow Cards Two yellow cards combine to equal a red card.
-
Any player who receives a red card will be forced to leave the game. His/her team will be forced to play with one less player for the rest of the game. The offending player will not be eligible for the next game, though his/her team will be able to play with a complete number of players for the following game.
-
Any player who is ejected from a contest must meet with the intramural director and will face sanctions depending on the severity of their actions.
Forfeit Any team that does not field a team of four players within five minutes of the scheduled starting time will be forced to forfeit, unless the present team agrees to wait.
-
If time does not permit for a full game to be played, then the first half of the game will be shortened by however long it was necessary to wait for the late team.
