February 13 - International Residence Hall Student Staff Recognition Day
February 16, 2000 was the first annual "International Residence Hall Student Staff Recognition Day."  On the third Wednesday of every February campuses around the world are recognizing those individuals who are hired or volunteer to be the leader of their floor.  While many titles are used to describe this position, the most commonly used is Resident Assistant (RA)."  Student staff in residence halls are the resources for some 3.5 million students living on campuses in the US, and many more around the world.  There are an estimated 100,000 RAs in the US alone, with 50,000 new RAs stepping into the position every year.
Resident Assistants (RAs) act as a resource, a friend, community builder, and policy enforcer in their residence halls.  On average, each RA has 35 residents on his or her floor.  The RA is responsible for creating an environment conducive to academic success and personal growth.  This responsibility is carried out through various social and educational programming.
ResidentAssistant.com, a resource website for RAs, and the sponsor of the International Recognition Day, contains over 400 pages of ideas and information from RAs around the world on how to better serve their residents.  Receiving over 160,000 page views a month, the site is where RAs share ideas, concerns and questions with professional staff and peers on every topic from homesickness to suicide threats.  There is also an interesting listing of famous former RAs, including Hillary Clinton, Sheryl Crow, Katie Couric and many others.
The idea for the recognition day came from Grant Anderson, a hall director at Colorado State University, who proposed it to Dan Oltersdorf, the creator of ResidentAssistant.com.  Oltersdorf, an RA himself, was excited about the idea, stating, "RAs are active student leaders on their campuses, and deserve recognition and praise for a hard job well done."

University expands Shuttle Service hours and locations, daily parking moves to South Euclid lot behind Cedar Shopping Center.
A new and improved shuttle service, The JCU Express Shuttle, will be launched this Sunday, September 23 offering expanded hours and new locations.  This new shuttle service replaces the former weekday shuttle service which transported students to and from campus to University Square and provides more access than ever to area retail, dining, and shopping attractions.
The JCU Express Shuttle loops every 20 minutes and will run Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. featuring the new daily parking location in the parking lot behind the Cedar Shopping Center.  On Saturdays and Sundays, the shuttle will operate from 12:00 p.m. to Midnight.  The daily parking lot considerably expands parking options, especially for first and second year students, and provides 24 hour security.  In addition, some parking spots at the new Cedar Shopping Center location have been designated as overnight parking for first and second year resident students.
The new shuttle stop location on campus will be in the Belvoir Lot, right outside the Recreation Center Desk entrance to the Student Center.  Students simply need to wait outside near the driveway turnaround to board.  Weekday transportation will be provided by university vans.  A minibus from Hopkins transportation will be used on Saturdays and Sundays.
For more information on The JCU Express Shuttle, contact Campus Safety Services during business hours at x1615 and at x4600 after hours and on the weekend.  Get off campus and explore your neighborhood!

Beta Theta Pi becomes the newest member of JCU's Fraternity and Sorority Life Community Beta Theta Pi Fraternity, originally founded in 1839 at Miami University of Ohio, will be expanding to John Carroll University this fall beginning October 1, becoming the fourth nationally-affiliated male fraternity on campus.  Dedicated to building men of principle for a principled life, Beta stresses lifelong devotion to intellectual excellence, high standards of moral conduct, and responsible citizenship.  The Fraternity has more than 120,000 living members including 5,800 collegians on 122 campuses in the United States and Canada.

Its "Men of Principle" initiative stresses that Betas will not only be universally known as friends, gentlemen, and scholars, but respected by the academic community, parents, and leaders of business, government, and the professions.

New Residential Curriculum Model Unveiled
The residential curriculum model of learning piloted this year will take residential student programming to the next level.  Area Coordinators created an intentional plan to educate their resident students that is based on the Office of Residence Life’s Residential Experience model and learning outcomes.  An example of this curriculum includes monthly RA interviews with individual students on their floor focusing on a particular topic each month. Staff members in each residence hall will be utilizing residential curricula to promote learning outside of the classroom among residents. The residential curricula were developed by each Area Coordinator and are tied directly to the Office of Residence Life’s Residential Experience Model and the related learning outcomes for first-year students, continuing students, and graduating seniors. Some of the implementation methods include bi-monthly one-on-one guided conversations between RAs and students, educational floor meetings, the Hall Beat newsletter, as well as many other means beyond traditional programming. Some examples include the activities to support the First Year Seminar course that are being planned for the first-year halls and a Diversity in the Workplace/Affirmative Action seminar for graduating seniors.

Gretchen Weitbrecht Resigns As JCU Softball Head Coach; Erin Brooks Named As Successor
After 17 seasons at the helm of the John Carroll University softball program, Gretchen Weitbrecht has announced that she will be resigning her position as head coach, effective immediately. Erin Brooks, John Carroll’s graduate assistant coach for the past two seasons, will take over as head coach for the 2008 campaign.
“Gretchen has served the university very well in many roles over the years,” said Laurie Massa, Director of Athletics and Recreation at John Carroll. “We will miss her presence on the field, but we are also happy that she will continue her administrative duties within our department.”
Weitbrecht steps down after compiling 264 victories in her 17 seasons, including a program best 24 in both 2000 and 2003. The 2003 season was historical for Weitbrecht and the JCU program as it was the first time the softball team has made an appearance in the OAC Tournament.
While Weitbrecht will no longer coach a team, she will continue to serve the university in the capacity of associate athletic director.
“I’ve been blessed to work with great student athletes over these years at John Carroll,” said Weitbrecht. “I look forward to staying affiliated with the students as an associate athletic director, but also appreciate the opportunity to place greater focus on my administrative role. I’m grateful to JCU for creating that opportunity.”
Earning the promotion to head coach, Erin Brooks will bring a strong background in the sport to her newly acquired position.  Brooks first joined the JCU staff in 2006 after a successful collegiate career at Fordham University.
“Erin has a passion for the game of softball and for coaching,” said Massa. “She will bring a high level of energy to the program. We are excited to have someone with her playing and recruiting experience in place to lead our softball program.”

Reverend Jim Prehn, SJ is set to join the Division of Student Affairs
Reverend Jim Prehn, S.J., will join John Carroll University in a newly created position, Dean of Student Development.  He will begin his duties in August 2007. Father Prehn comes to John Carroll from Walsh Jesuit High School, where he served as principal for the past six years.
In his new role at John Carroll, Father Prehn’s responsibilities will include the supervision of campus ministry, liturgical music and musical arts, and residence life. The goal of his work is to help create and sustain a vibrant community for students living on campus. He will also explore and initiate programs and services to further the spiritual development of all students.
Father Prehn earned his Bachelor of Arts in History from Oakland University, Master of Arts in Philosophy from Fordham University, Master of Divinity from Jesuit School of Theology at Berkeley, and Doctor of Education in School Administration from the University of San Francisco.  He recently pronounced his Solemn Final Vows during the October 2006 visit of Fr. Peter-Hans Kolvenbach, S.J., the Superior General of the Society of Jesus.
The Dean of Student Development position at JCU is made possible, in part, by recent funding from the Jesuit Community to assist in hiring Jesuits who can contribute to the mission of John Carroll University.
