ORIENTATION PURPOSE & OUTCOMES

The purpose of the orientation program at JCU, including the summer and fall program, is
to assist first-year students in making a successful transition to the John Carroll University community in the following areas:  mission-centered initiatives, academic engagement, co-curricular opportunities, and healthy relationships. 

Outcomes

Mission

  • Students will be able to articulate/recognize the university's Jesuit mission.
  • Students will understand what it means to be a servant leader.
  • Students will understand the concept of social justice.
  • Students will be introduced to and embrace diversity. 
  • Students will be aware of the opportunities on and off campus to get involved in service and social justice. 

Academics

  • Students will develop and share their intellectual curiosity.
  • Students will become familiar with academic requirements.
  • Students will be introduced to the academic expectations of the university and collegiate studies. 
  • Students will begin to cultivate an advising relationship with a faculty member.
  • Students will become familiar with campus resources including, but not limited to: academic advising, information technology, career center, global education, multicultural affairs, and disability support services. 

Collegiate Transition and Involvement

  • Students will understand the importance of involvement and link to successful college transition, success and persistence. 
  • Students will be aware of the student organizations and clubs that are available on campus.
  • Students will be able to identify various offices within the division of student affairs (office of student activities, residence life) as involvement resources.
  • Image of Small Group at OrientationStudents will be able to recognize and articulate strategies for balancing their academic, co-curricular, work, social, and personal lives.
  • Students will make connections with faculty, staff, administrators and other
    students in order to increase matriculation and satisfaction.
  • Students will understand the issues they may face during the first-year and be familiar with the support resources that can help.  
  • Students will be introduced to and learn about the academic, service, career, and social opportunities available to them in Cleveland. 
  • Students will be introduced to the campus traditions at JCU.
  • Students will have the opportunity to meet other students and make connections in both formal and informal ways. 

Health and Wellness

  • Students will increase their understanding of the risks associated with alcohol misuse.
  • Students will increase their understanding of the environmental, cultural, and personal risk factors associated with sexual assault.
  • Students will increase their understanding of the health and wellness issues that may arise during their college careers: nutrition, stress, STDs, intramurals, recreation.
  • Students will be able to identify resources that can assist them with health and wellness issues (health center, academic advising, residence life, dean of students, and counseling services).
