Mark McCarthy

Dr. Mark D. McCarthy joins John Carroll University as Vice President for Student Affairs on August 4, 2008.

Dr. McCarthy comes to JCU from Marquette University, where he was Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs/ Dean of Student Development.  He has nearly 30 years of administrative experience in a variety of student affairs areas at both public and private institutions.

He holds a Ph.D. in Educational Policy and Leadership from Marquette University, a master’s degree in Student Personnel Administration from the University of Maryland, and a bachelor’s degree from the Pennsylvania State University.

In his role at Marquette, Dr. McCarthy was responsible for the Office of Student Development, a department within the Division of Student Affairs, that plans and implements a wide range of co-curricular programs related to community service, leadership, student conduct, campus activities, music performing groups, intercultural activities and first-year students. He also has extensive experience in the development and implementation of learning assessment in the co-curriculum.

Through his work, Dr. McCarthy aspires to encourage active student involvement and a strong, vibrant and diverse campus community; foster a lifelong ethic of service and a commitment to working for a more just society; and enhance student leadership and character development.

Dr. McCarthy is a member of Phi Beta Kappa and has served on the executive board of the Jesuit Association of Student Personnel Administrators, as well as several committees of the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators.

Dr. Kathleen Lis Dean has served as Assistant Vice President for Assessment and Planning in Student Affairs since June, 2008. In this role, Dr. Dean oversees outcomes assessment, strategic planning, and program review for the Division. She came to John Carroll as Assistant to the Vice President for Student Affairs in August 2005, having previously served in the Office of Institutional Research and Planning at the University of Maryland, where she worked on student learning outcomes assessment and served on the Campus Assessment Working Group. She began her career in higher education as a career counselor at Bryn Mawr and Haverford Colleges. From there, she became the internship coordinator and assistant director at the Center for Work and Service at Wellesley College. She earned her Ph.D. in Education Policy and Leadership at the University of Maryland, College Park, writing her dissertation on boundary spanning in presidential leadership teams, as well as an M.Ed. in Student Personnel Administration/College Counseling and a B.A. in International Relations, both at the University of Delaware.

Mary Ann Hanicak

Mary Ann serves John Carroll University as an Assistant to the Vice President for Student Affairs.  She has been at JCU since May, 1999 and has worked in Residence Life as an Area Coordinator and most recently as the Director of Student Activities.  In 1993, she received a B.A. in Psychology from Bowling Green State University.  In 1995, Mary Ann returned to Bowling Green and graduated in 1997 with an M.A. in College Student Personnel.  Previous to working at John Carroll University, Mary Ann has worked at The University of Findlay in student activities and greek life and at Saint Louis University in residence life.

Barbara Kingsbury
Administrative Assistant to the Vice President for Student Affairs

Barbara Kingsbury serves as the Administrative Assistant to the Vice President for Student Affairs.  She is responsible for managing the office and administrative duties.  She also serves as the liaison between all the secretaries in the Student Affairs Division.

She has been employed at JCU since 1994 and loves interacting with the students as well as being part of the JCU community.  She lives in Lyndhurst with her husband Bob, and has three children, Candace, Bobby, and Courtney and one grandchild, Grace Katherine.

 

 

Mary Bridget Mathews

Mary Bridget Mathews recently graduated from Xavier University and is a first year graduate student at John Carroll. She hopes to receive her M.Ed. in school counseling and looks forward to working in the Vice President of Student Affairs Office.
