JCU's Right to Life Group headed to Washington, D.C., for the annual Right to Life March "March for Life" held on the anniversary of the Supreme Court Decision Roe v. Wade.  Before departing, the group prepared for their experience by learning more about the Catholic Church's "Consistent Ethic of Life" which calls for a protection of all life from conception until death.  Along with other topic-based speakers, Dr. Paul Lauritzen, director of JCU's Institute for Applied Ethics, spoke with the group about the challenging ethical debates related to life issues. The group also received a special blessing from Bishop Richard Lennon, during mass in St. Francis Chapel on Sunday, January 20th.

Image of SOA ProtestTwenty-one students and four FSA's traveled to Columbus, GA to take part in the Ignatian Family Teach-In and the protest of the U.S. Army School of the Americas. The group prepared for this trip through community-building and information/activity sessions to learn about the issues related to the SOA and U.S. policy in Latin America. The three day trip included a chance to hear from numerous speakers at the Ignatian Family Teach-In who focused on a variety of social justice issues. The teach-in closed with a Catholic liturgy on Saturday evening which attracted over 4,000 people. The time at the protest included particpation in a solemn mock funeral vigil to remember victims of torture and murder at the hands of School of the Americas graduates. The group gathered at the end of the day on Sunday to begin processing their experience and discuss what they experienced, what they want to learn more about, how the experience related to their faith, and what they are feeling called to do after the experience. The group will meet peridocally over the next few months to continue processing the trip.

11/15/07 - Remembrance of the Jesuit Martyrs of El Salvador and their Companions
Image of Die-InIn 1989, six Jesuit priests, their housekeeper, and her daughter were killed at the University of Central America (UCA) in San Salvador, El Salvador. They were targeted by U.S. trained troops for their efforts to advocate for the rights of the poor in the country. Each year JCU's JUSTICE group remembers the works and spirt of these men and women in various ways. This year the group held a die-in where they lied silently as a representation of the scene outside the Jesuit residence on 11/16/89. A mass was also held later in the evening to prayer for peace and an end to injustice in our world.

This retreat offers students an opportunity to explore in more depth some of life's ultimate questions - Who am I?
