HOW YOU CAN HELP

Consider serving as a mentor yourself, or maybe you are in the position to hire JCU students for part-time, full-time, or internship opportunities. Maybe you can pass on our contact information to the person at your organization who is in charge of human resources or hiring.

"INSIGHT" TIPS:

You're Studying WHAT?

Or.

What are you going to do with THAT?

By Cynthia Marco-Scanlon, Ph.D. - harried mother of 3 college kids..and JCU Career Counselor

How many times have YOU asked these questions?????

Asking these questions and not hearing a good answer probably has been driving you (and your student) crazy - especially if they REALLY DON'T KNOW! (Two of my 3 college kids avoided certain relatives because of this dilemma!)

If your student isn't sure what to major in, or what career path is for them - career counseling at our Career Center can help with the exploration of their interests, work values, personality and skills..to help them make an informed choice. It consists of several 1:1 appointments that may include assessments, to help them through the decision making process. They just need to call 216-397-4237 and ask for a career counseling/assessment appointment.

Do you think your student might know what they want to do - but they aren't quite sure? We can help with that too - through an internship to "try out" their idea for a career. We have a lot of opportunities for your student to "test the waters". Internships can be for credit or not - and most are paid. If the internship is unpaid - they may have the chance to qualify for a scholarship opportunity through our office.

Our Career Center offers classes for students also - to help in their decision making process. These "Career Education" classes are explained later on - check them out as they are FOR CREDIT too!

Does your student know EXACTLY what they want to major in and have a solid "career path" in mind? You might suggest they try out their idea through an internship, also. That way, they'll start networking with professionals in a chosen field - and find they can start learning "on the job skills " that will benefit them in their first job after graduation. Most students will be expected to not only have a degree, but also several internships under their belt upon graduation!

Making the transition from college student to professional can be an awesome and overwhelming task for some students if they aren't prepared. My oldest is graduating from Saint Louis University in May, and has repeatedly stated that he's really going to miss being a student - and knows he will soon be paying his own bills, signing contracts for living arrangements, etc. We offer a great "transitioning" class for Juniors and Seniors called " Introduction to the World of Work" (CE131)...and the topics that are covered in class are based on what the students have stated are a "necessity" to transitioning to a worker. I'm hoping my son took a similar class at SLU..

When your student is ready to look for that internship, full-time professional job, or a summer work experience, we can help them get ready for their search with interviewing practice and tips, resume development and refinement, and registering on our job search portal CareerConnection .. They just need to call or come in and make an appointment. I work with great professionals in our office that are very experienced in the career area - and love working with the college-student population.

We are here to help you and your student through these college years.. Let us know what you need.. I know I'll need a vacation after all 3 of my college kids return home this weekend for their break!

Visit our web sight www.jcu.edu/careercenter to see all that we offer - or better yet, email this to your student...and have them call us for an appointment!
