Dr. Murphy is a native of Chicago who attended Fairfield University for his B.A. in History (1979). He holds an M.A. in Medieval History from Loyola University, Chicago (1984) and an M.Div. from Weston School of Theology in Cambridge, Mass. (1989). His Ph.D. in History is from the University of Toronto (1996). His major field of expertise is Early Modern History (Renaissance and Reformation) and he has published extensively on the reforming Cardinal Ercole Gonzaga (1505-63), and the early Jesuits; his current research concerns the sanctuary of the Holy House at Loreto.
In the past Dr. Murphy has served as the Director of the Joan and Ralph Lane Center for Catholic Studies and Social Thought at the University of San Francisco and the Director of the St. Ignatius Institute at USF. His teaching experience includes tenures at St. George's College, Kingston, Jamaica; University of Toronto; Loyola University's Rome Center; as well as the University of San Francisco.
