Celebration 2009

line

Welcome to JCU’s eighth annual Celebration of Scholarship! This event began with the purpose of communicating with the entire campus community those ideas which we normally share in the classroom. This scholarly work includes discovery, integration and application, three elements of scholarship that Ernest Boyer defines in Scholarship Reconsidered.  The week’s events will celebrate our engagement in these aspects of scholarship.

Our collaboration with East Asian Studies continues as we conclude the first day of the Celebration with the Mitsui Lecture entitled  War and the Environment: The Case of Japan During World War II and given by William Tsutsui, Professor of History at the University of Kansas.

We continue to honor and recognize the arts via our Arts at Lunch program that will be held on Monday and Tuesday. In addition, we have added a spoken word performance by Richard Bausch, winner of the PEN/Malamud Award for Excellence in the Short Story as well as the Academy of Arts and Letters Award in Literature on Wednesday evening in Donahue Auditorium at 7:30. This event is co-sponsored by the Department of English.

There are numerous opportunities to become better acquainted with the scholarly endeavors of our faculty and students throughout the week. New this year is the Scholarly Lunch Series where faculty share the results of either their Grauel Faculty Fellowship or Summer Research Fellowship. The lunches will take place on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of Celebration week.

The schedule also includes many presentations by JCU students reflecting on what they have learned in the classroom and out.  The complement of panels, presentations and posters demonstrate the many ways in which the JCU community is actively engaged in the scholarly pursuit.

I invite you to join in the celebration of the various kinds of scholarship thriving on our campus to better appreciate and applaud faculty and students for their individual and collective professional accomplishments.

Lauren Bowen, Ph.D.
Associate Academic Vice President for Academic Programs and Faculty Diversity
