Endowment
for financial assistance to students |
 |
Through financial assistance we must attract
the best students from varied ethnic, cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds.
Once they arrive, we must provide them with the scholarly support
and tools necessary for learning. Accomplishing this depends on our
ability to increase endowment.
True to our origins, John Carroll has always sought to provide financial
aid to needy applicants of merit who wish to pursue their education
within the Catholic and Jesuit tradition, both inside and outside
the classroom. In recent years this has become a challenge. Over the
past two decades, our commitment to keeping John Carroll accessible
has required a considerable investment in financial aid, rising from
approximately $2 million 20 years ago to more than $18 million today.
Even this amount is inadequate to meet the total needs of many students
and their families.
To compensate for the shortfall, the university must rely on operating
revenue. Over the past several years, John Carroll has committed more
than one quarter of its operating funds for scholarships and financial
aid—a trend that can only be reversed by increasing the endowment.
