Endowment for study
and research programs |
 |
Increasing the endowment also would enable us to provide
greater support to our faculty members who attend to our second definition
of scholarship: the pursuit of knowledge. As teachers and scholars,
they serve as models of the intellectual life, initiating students
into the world of independent learning, and developing their capability
for critical evaluation and original thinking. This requires faculty
members to undertake research, keep abreast of their areas of specialization,
create new knowledge and, where appropriate, discover how their research
can contribute to a more humane and just society.
At John Carroll research complements and strengthens teaching. Faculty
members with a commitment to research, provided with both the time
and funding to pursue it, will become better teachers by extension.
To remain competitive through academic excellence we must increase
the pool of funds available to the faculty for fellowships and other
incentives that can lead to new avenues of inquiry for professors
and students alike.
One such avenue is the Center for Teaching and Learning, which provides
faculty with both formal and informal opportunities to improve the
classroom experience. Another avenue is the opportunity to study abroad.
Because the Jesuit commitment to education has had an international
dimension from its beginning, our endowment campaign includes opportunities
for donors to support programs that allow students and faculty to
engage in study abroad, from Beijing to Rome.
