Partnering for Success (PFS), teachers are provided with high-quality professional as part of a committed partnership whose goal is to increase student learning. The PFS initiative is designed to increase content knowledge and improve teaching practice through training teams of teachers. Each institute focuses on grade band specific content standards (earth/space, life and physical science) while incorporating science process skills. Teachers are activity involved in inquiry learning. Materials and lesson plan binders used in the institutes are given to each teacher.

Science and Mathematics Data Analysis
for grade 1-6 teachers (SAMDA)


July 22 – 25, 2008

 

 
Open to teachers of mathematics and science in grades 1-6, this workshop will develop your understanding of how to fully integrate mathematics with science using data analysis techniques. Lunches, books, and other take-home educational materials will be provided. You will have an opportunity to learn how to design hands-on, inquiry lessons that generate data and then practice non-formulaic methods of analyzing the data. All the lessons and materials are aligned to benchmarks from the Ohio state standards. An iDiscovery online class during the fall 2008 semester will continue the learning started in the summer session. Participation in the online follow-on will be at no additional cost to participants.

Exploring the Environment Using GEMS

June 30- July 2 , 2008 - Session is FULL

 

 
Designed specifically for grades 6-10 teachers, this 3-day workshop will use internationally recognized supplementary curriculum, GEMS, to help increase content knowledge and skills in environmental science. Explore current environmental concerns using real-life conditions and sound scientific inquiry practices. Acid rain, global warming, and other current environmental issues will be investigated.

Exploring Science and Math for the
Early Childhood Teacher

Designed specifically for preK – grade 2 teachers, this 3-day workshop will use internationally recognized supplementary curriculum, GEMS, to help increase content knowledge and skills in science. The GEMS guides presented in this workshop were developed by the staff at the Lawrence Hall of Science at the University of California, Berkeley. “The activities engage students in direct experience and experimentation to introduce essential, standards-based principles and concepts. Clear step-by-step instructions enable all teachers to be successful presenting the activities. GEMS units offer effective, practical, economical, and schedule-friendly ways to provide high-quality science and math learning to all students.” (www.lhsgems.org)
