On Sunday, May 17, John Carroll celebrated 720 undergraduate- and 270 graduate-degree candidates at one of life’s major rites of passage – Commencement. The ceremony took place on John Carroll University's Quad at noon.
So, what’s next for John Carroll’s Class of 2009?
By all accounts, they face the toughest job market in decades. Yet, Hilary Flanagan, director of John Carroll’s Career Center, says employers are interested in hiring Carroll grads.
During the 2008-2009 academic year:
- The Career Center had more appointments for on-campus interviews than students interested in interviewing.
- The number of jobs posted online at John Carroll’s “Career Connection” remained steady.
- More than 100 employers were on campus for the Center’s annual career fair.
While it’s too soon to have hard data on the entire Class of 2009, the Career Center has polled approximately 20 percent of John Carroll’s graduating seniors.
- 88 percent plan to stay in Ohio. The remainder will travel near and far -- to Arizona, Georgia, Illinois, Massachusetts, Michigan, Montana, New York, Pennsylvania, Vermont, Washington, D.C., and even Micronesia -- the latter, to spend the year in service to others.
- 4 percent have committed to a year of service with organizations like the Jesuit Volunteer Corps, City Year, and Amate House.
- The remainder of the class is split almost 50/50 between graduate school and employment. Many will stay at JCU to pursue advanced degrees.
Those with full-time employment represent a cross-section of majors -- history, English, accountancy, finance, psychology, marketing, logistics, and communication.
They are taking their next life steps to become teachers, management trainees, auditors, network engineers, research analysts, marketing coordinators, product developers, and investment analysts.
“Employers frequently tell us that our students are sought for their extra measure of excellence,” Flanagan says. “John Carroll does not just prepare you for your first job, but for your fifth job -- in fact, for your entire career. We prepare you for life.”
