A Tribute to Tim Russert ’72 - John Carroll University

John Carroll University celebrated the life and legacy of alumnus, Tim Russert (Class of 1972), host of NBC’s Meet the Press at a May 2 event on campus. Classmates traveled from around the country to attend this special “Tribute to Tim Russert.”

Mr. Russert passed away suddenly in June 2008.  The news of his death was reported around the globe, as he was a highly respected journalist who interviewed world leaders and heads of state.

Rev. Robert L. Niehoff, S.J., president of John Carroll University, made three major announcements
in honor of Mr. Russert:

  • THE TIM RUSSERT ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP

Before his sudden death, Tim Russert endowed a John Carroll University scholarship that is to be annually awarded to a high school student from Buffalo area or Western New York. Katherine E. Warner, of East Amherst, New York, is the first recipient of the scholarship.

  • THE TIM RUSSERT DEPARTMENT OF COMMUNICATION & THEATRE ARTS

The DEPARTMENT OF COMMUNICATION & THEATRE ARTS will be renamed.

  • NBC/JOHN CARROLL UNIVERSITY MEET THE PRESS FELLOWSHIP

John Carroll University has formed a partnership with NBC to create a post-graduate fellowship at “Meet the Press” for a John Carroll graduate.  This partnership ties together two of Tim’s beloved institutions and will provide a John Carroll graduate a tremendous opportunity to work for NBC’s number one rated Sunday morning public affairs program and the longest running television program in the world.

The application process will be announced in the coming weeks, with the goal of selecting a student for this honor during the 2009-10 academic year.
