Mr. Mark Krieger recently joined John Carroll as an adjunct asst. professor and director of the university’s radio station, WJCU-FM.

A native Clevelander, Mark has spent his life immersed in all things radio, finding it the perfect combination of a passion for technology and a fondness for the stage. Mark’s first job was as an engineer for WKDD in Akron in the mid 1970’s. Since that time he has worked for a number of Cleveland radio outlets, but his longest tenure was a 13 year stint as director of engineering for Nationwide Communications (WGAR AM & FM).

During his career, Mark advanced the cause of broadcast technology by becoming an active member in the Society of Broadcast Engineers, where he served as an officer for over 18 years. He also served for 7 years as Co-Chairman of the northeast Ohio Emergency Alert System, acting as a liaison between broadcasters and emergency management officials over an eight county area. In recognition of his continuing contributions to the industry, Mark was inducted to the Broadcast Hall of Fame in Akron, Ohio in 1998. Between 1999 and 2004, he also worked with the National Football League, coordinating spectrum management with TV networks, NFL teams, and other electronic media at Cleveland Browns Stadium. Mark has presented technical papers at the National Association of Broadcaster’s national convention and currently serves as a technical consultant and contributing author of Radio Magazine. He holds a lifetime General Class Radiotelephone Operators License, and is a licensed radio amateur, call sign N8PXZ.

But not all of Mark’s life has been devoted to the technical side. He spent time on stage as an actor, winning a scholarship for his theatrical work at Cuyahoga Community College’s western campus. Naturally, he always managed to find his way behind a microphone at most of the radio stations he worked for.

In recent years, Mark has become interested in the fundamentals of his industry. Research work he did while working on his Master’s thesis was later expanded to a national study, entitled Zeroing In on the Radio Audience: Why They Listen, in collaboration with Dr. Carolyn Lin and funded by a grant from the National Association of Broadcasters. Lin and Krieger presented their findings in a joint paper presented at the 2002 national convention of the Broadcast Education Association. He is also a BEA member.

When Mark isn’t engaged in teaching or other occupational engagements, he likes to spend time with his wife Joyce, and his two sons Nathanial, and Max. He’s also known to frequent the trails and woodlands of the Cuyahoga Valley National Park via boot, bike, ski, and canoe.
