Inspiring a Culture of Sustainability at John Carroll

JCU QuadA Sustainability Committee was launched at JCU in 2010 to inspire a culture of sustainability at the University and to improve the education and the communication of our green initiatives both on-campus and in our larger community. University Height. Mayor Susan Inleld and Counselman Frank Consolo visited campus in July to see the "Greening of Hamlin Quad" John Carroll's Carol Dietz, associate vice president for facilities and chair of the campus·wide Sustainability Committee, and Dora Pruce, director of gove rnment and community relations. led Infeld and Consolo on a tour of Hamlin Quad. named in honor of Dick (49) and Yvonne Hamlin. The quad was previously an asphalt, temporary parking lot. The newly seeded area will become a beautiful, spacious lawn for John Carroll's students and neighbors to enjoy. www.jcu.edu/sustainability

Everyone attending Homecoming is asked to bring non·perishable items to fill a school bus lor the JCU Fatima Family Center Thanksgiving Food Drive. We will use the donations to provide 100 families with a week of groceries at Thanksgiving. The Arrupe Scholars program is a sponsor.

Join us in supporting the 2010 Ride for Miles in memory of Miles Coburn. Ph.D., '75G. This annual, non-competitive bicycle ride raises funds for the JCU Biology Department's Miles Coburn Environmental Symposium. The race begins at the Dolan Center for Science and Technology. For the second consecutive year, JCU will host a statewide conference on the growing flair trade consumer movement. The day includes speakers from across the U.S. with opportunities for beginners and experts to learn. The Fair Trade Marketplace will offer fair trade artisan and food/drink products fIrom around the world. Ben & Jerry's University Heights Scoop Shop will offer samples of ice creams made with Fair Trade Certified ingredients! HALL-o-ween Trick or Treat
John Carroll University Residence Halls, 5:30 - 7 p.m.
The Residence Hall Association at John Carroll will host the 7th annual Trick or Treat night on Wednesday, Oct. 27. Bring your children. nieces, nephews, and grandchildren to spend a fun and safe night "Trick-or-Treating" through our halls. Every residence hall will participate; half will be spooky and half will be child-friendly. There will be food, fun, and, of course, CANDY! Guides will be on hand to help you through the buildings and around campus. Be sure to pick up your campus map in the Lombardo Student Center Atrium. Contact rha@jcu_edu with questions.

The Bishop Pilla Program in Italian American Studies is having a lecture by Bishop Anthony M. Pilla, Emeritus Bishop of the Diocese of Cleveland, entitled, "The Role of Cleveland's Italian Nationality Parishes in Ministering to the Immigrants and in Preserving Italian Culture."

40th Anniversary of Women's Athletics
The 2010-11 year marks the milestone of 40 years of Women's Athletics at John Carroll University. Celebrations will include a special tribute at the Athletic Hall of Fame Dinner and Induction ceremony, Homecoming Weekend, and during the following athletic alumni events this fall:

JCU supports HEFC, Fatima Center

JCU has a community garden (behind the Counseling Center on S. Belvoir); we donate all produce to the Heights Emergency Food Center (HEFC). Residents who have extra produce from their own gardens are invited to drop off any food on Wednesday of each week from Sept. 1 to Oct. 1 and we will deliver your produce to HEFC. Please bring food donations to the Center for Service and Social Action, Administration Bldg.. Room 30 (on ground floor).

The Fatima Family Center Thanksgiving Food Drive in University Heights returns this fall. Grocery bags will be distributed Oct. l5-22 10 all homes in Univeristy Heights. Students will go door-to-door to collect filled bags from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. On Saturday. Oct. 23. Please contact Peggy Finucane, Ph.D., at mfinucane@jcu.edu with any questions.
