COUNSELING CENTER SERVICES

How does Counseling Work?

Individual Counseling

  • Counselors are available to meet on an individual basis with students seeking help. The student seeking counseling can talk confidentially about anything that is on his or her mind.  Students often seek counseling to deal with family difficulties, relationships, stress, loneliness, eating problems, or sadness.

Group Counseling

  • The Counseling Center may offer groups to bring together people who want to work on specific areas such as bereavement and study skills. Call the Counseling Center for details.

Consultation

  • Counselors are available to consult with faculty, staff and students on a variety of issues. Faculty members or staff sometimes wish to consult a counselor about a student who may seem to be in particular distress.  Students often ask for help with their concerns about friends. Counselors can also help individuals who are having difficulty communicating with one another.

Training and Outreach

  • The Counseling Center offers prevention programs in a number of problem areas:

    • Suicide Prevention
    • Alcohol - and other drug related issues
    • Time Management
    • Adjustment

Programs have been provided for the Athletic Department, Residence Life, Information Services, and Campus Safety Services.  The Counseling Center will work with teams, departments, student groups, etc. that wish to do programming.

Psychiatric Services

  • Psychiatric services are available one afternoon per month at the Counseling Center in conjunction with the Cleveland Clinic.  Only students who are currently engaged in counseling at the center are eligible for these services and will be referred by their counselor.  Students will need to use their medical insurance to pay for services provided by the Cleveland Clinic.  The Counseling Center also provides additional referrals for psychiatric services to physicians in private practice in the community.

Emergency Services

  • A Counseling Center staff member is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week during the school year.  In the event of an emergency after regular working hours, an on-call person from the Counseling Center can be reached through Campus Safety Services at (216) 397-4600.

What about Confidentiality?

  • All information shared during the counseling experience is held in complete confidence within the Counseling Center, except in cases where there is imminent danger to the individual or other.
