I'm originally from Pittsburgh.  I graduated from JCU in 1972 and went home to teach high school and coach basketball for twelve years, but found my way to counseling as a profession and a life in the mid 1980's.  I returned to John Carroll in 1991 and have been with the University Counseling Center ever since.  I'm married with three great stepdaughters and my wife (she's great, too) is a special education teacher.
As a counselor, I believe there are many things that happen to each of us across a lifetime to bring us to each moment in the here and now.  Understanding those things that shaped us and the way they color our experience - how we live, the choices we make, how we try our best to love those around us and ourselves, is what I think counseling is all about.  Hopefully, with that understanding, we can grow and change in our own way to live more fully and more faithfully.

I've been working in college counseling since 1992 and feel very fortunate to have the chance to work with students here at my alma mater.  I believe counseling can be a valuable, even life-changing experience for people, and I really enjoy helping students learn more about themselves through this process.  The Counseling Center is a great resource on JCU's campus and I hope you will stop by some time to check us out.
My educational background includes a B.S. in Psychology and Masters in Community Counseling from John Carroll University and I received my Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from Kent State University.  I'm trained in interpersonal counseling, couples therapy, and career counseling and my special interests include working with students who are experiencing anxiety/stress, academic concerns, relationship difficulties, eating disorders and/or body image concerns.

Before coming to John Carroll, I worked in the Counseling Center at Michigan State University.  I have an M.S. in Experimental Psychology and an M.A. in Counseling Psychology, and am in the process of completing my Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology.  I am new to the Cleveland area, and have had fun exploring and finding new places for my dog to play.
As a counselor, I hope to facilitate self-awareness in others in a way that ultimately helps them make the changes they want to make in their lives.  I believe in a collaborative counseling relationship, and primarily work from a Humanistic, Interpersonal, and Feminist perspective.  In part, this means I believe that important elements of counseling relationships include respecting individual differences, believing in our inherent capacity for growth and the healing potential of relationships, honoring the influence of cultural factors, and valuing personal empowerment.  I am particularly interested in women's and gender issues, as well as issues related to diversity.  I enjoy being a part of the John Carroll community, and the opportunities for connection that are inherent in a smaller campus.
