Consistent with the University’s mission statement that the
institution is “dedicated to developing men and women with
the knowledge and character to lead and serve” and consistent
with the Jesuit idea of “cultivating moral concern about how
people ought to live together”; a group of faculty members
has been developing an ambitious initiative to make peace-building,
social justice, and human rights considerations a central feature
of academic and experiential learning for both faculty and students.
To this end, we are developing a faculty learning community to (1)
develop an interdisciplinary foundational course in the area of
human rights and (2) develop the academic structure for an interdisciplinary
summer institute in peace-building and human rights. With appropriate
contextual modifications, this institute could take place abroad
or within the United States as dictated by faculty expertise, student
interest, and security concerns.
With support from the Center for Teaching and Learning we plan
to facilitate several meetings for interested faculty from May 2006
through the end of 2006-07 academic year. Participants will receive
a stipend. Interested faculty should contact: Dr. Richard Clark,
(Sc.4651) or Dr. Matthew Berg (Hs. 4763) for more information.
