A faculty learning community on “Poverty
and Solidarity: Educating for Social Responsibility” will
take place throughout the academic year. The shared reading and
discussion, JCU faculty members will gain a deeper understanding
of poverty-related issues and the importance of educating our students
about local, domestic, and global poverty through courses across
the curriculum. Upon completion of the learning community, participating
faculty will be expected to add a significant component or unit
on poverty to an existing course or courses. Participating faculty
also will be strongly encouraged to include a community -based learning
experience in these courses. The overall goal of this workshop is
to expand opportunities for student learning about poverty by developing
discipline-based courses that will embed the study of poverty throughout
the curriculum. Participants will receive a stipend. Interested
faculty should contact Dr. James Lissemore (BL 4196) for more information.
