King's Brings New Beginnings
| JCU Debate began its season by taking four brand new college debaters to King's College, the season opening tournament for the American Debate Association. Freshmen Stewart Shankel and Andy Labuza represented JCU in the junior varsity division, while freshman Chris Schroeder and junior Sean McClure debated in the novice division. |

It was a series of adjustments for all of them. For example, none had previously debated in college; Andy, a high school Lincoln-Douglas debater, had never debated with a partner; only Stewart had any previous policy debate experience; and Sean's only previous debate experience was in the CO 245 class; and Chris' previous debate experience was limited to some public forum debate. However, adjust they did. Stewart and Andy had a very respectable entry into college policy debate. Meanwhile, Sean and Chris went 4-2, cleared, defeated Cornell in the first elim round, and dropped a 2-1 decision to Liberty in the quarters. |
| It was a good start to a long season. Now, if we can just do something about those van rides. |
