AWARDS

GOLDEN APPLE AWARDS – Early Childhood, Middle Childhood, AYA, MA

These awards honor Seniors for academic excellence based on their grade point averages.  Normally, the department makes six to eight of these awards each year, divided among candidates for certification/licensure at different levels.

SENIOR HUCK AWARD – Early Childhood, Middle Childhood, AYA, MA

Dr. Francis T. Huck's career in the department spanned three decades--the 60s, 70s, and 80s.  He taught research and statistics, but his love was the teacher education program, where he assigned students for field placement and student teaching.  Upon retirement, the Department established the Francis T. Huck Award to honor outstanding student teachers.  The department makes the $200 award available to student teachers pursuing certification/licensure at different levels.  the selection process is as follows:  university supervisors each nominate student teachers with a minimum overall grade point average of 3.0.  The full-time teacher education faculty selects recipients, based on university supervisor recommendation, academic achievement, and professionalism.

JOSEPH OWENS, SJ SCHOLARSHIP AWARD

Father Joseph Owens, S.J. was a member of the Department of Education form its founding in 1935 to his retirement in 1987.  Father Owens was instrumental in building teacher education at JCU into one of Ohio's premier professional programs.  this scholarship, of $1000, is awarded to the outstanding Junior student who best exemplifies the values of scholarship, leadership, and service that Father Owens championed during his tenure in the department.  Applications are available early in the spring semester.  Requirements consist of an overall grade point average of at least 3.0, three letters of recommendation from university faculty (to include one from the Department of Education and Allied Studies), and an essay.  Finalists are interviewed.

Selection is based on academic achievement, strength of recommendations, and essay, and (for finalists) quality of the interview.

REV. JOSEPH O. SCHELL IGNATIAN AWARD for EXCELLENCE in EDUCATION

WILLIAM P. HOFFMAN SCHOLARSHIP

SALLY H. WERTHEIM EDUCATIONAL LEADERSHIP AWARD

This award recognizes an outstanding graduate student who not only demonstrates scholarship, character, and commitment to others—qualities steeped in the Jesuit mission—but who also seeks to enhance, and shows promise for improving, the educational experiences of children and youth.  Candidates for the award must be enrolled or plan to enroll in a graduate degree program in education at John Carroll.  Students in the school-based program are not eligible to apply.

The Sally H. Wertheim Educational Leadership Award commemorates Dr. Wertheim’s service and leadership to the John Carroll Community.  Currently the Director of Planning and Assessment, and Professor of Education, Dr. Wertheim also served as academic vice president during an interim period and chaired the Department of Education and Allied Studies for nine years.  She teaches in the areas of foundations of education, multicultural education, and human relations.  Her leadership extends beyond JCU into the surrounding community, where she has served on several boards in Greater Cleveland and statewide.  Dr. Wertheim received her Ph.D. in history of education from Case Western Reserve University.

Requirements for the award include an application, an official undergraduate transcript with a minimum grade point average of 3.0, three letters of recommendation that describe academic and professional accomplishments and community service, and a 500 word essay that demonstrates how the candidate plans to make a difference in the educational experiences of children and youth.

The selection process begins in the fall semester with the formation of a selection committee that includes the Graduate School dean (or designee), a Wertheim family member, the chair of the Education and Allied Studies Department, and a department faculty member appointed by the chair.  The deadline for applications and supporting documentation is March 1, 2001.  Finalists will be contacted for a personal interview, and the award will be announced and presented during the spring semester.  The scholarship may be applied to tuition only (full- or part- time), and must be used within a 5-year period.

The scholarship amount is $5000.  The scholarship fund’s principal may increase in future years through gifts made by friends inclined to continue their support.
