Physical Education
Coordinator: Mr. Ron Dolciato
The Department of Education and Allied Studies provides a variety of courses to serve the recreational, fitness, and professional needs of the students. An undergraduate major in physical education, with an emphasis in fitness, athletic training, or teacher preparation, integrated into a liberal arts course of study, provides for a well-balanced Bachelor of Arts degree. The department also offers a minor in physical education to complement undergraduate preparation in a variety of other majors. The physical education major or minor can be practically and professionally combined with a variety of areas: business, biology, sociology, psychology, communications.
The department encourages all students to select electives in activity and theory courses which provide opportunities for the development of physical fitness and the acquisition of lifetime skills. Elective courses in science will prepare the physical education and exercise science major for post-graduate or in allied health professions.
The Fitness Specialist Program prepares students for careers as professional, commercial, and/or corporate fitness specialists.
The major combined with the appropriate teacher education courses leads to a Multi-Age teaching license in physical education.
Combining the exercise science program with appropriate courses in laboratory sciences can help gain admission to graduate degree programs in the allied health fields, such as athletic training, physical therapy, or exercise physiology.
Major/Minor Requirements and Teaching Certification:
The physical education and exercise science major is designed to meet the academic and professional needs of students. The three common areas of undergraduate preparation have been teacher certification, athletic training, and fitness. Students may also pursue the major or comprehensive major without choosing one of these tracks.
Students seeking teacher certification should become familiar with the professional education courses required, in addition to those required for the physical education and exercise science major.
