1. Father Glynn calls for Congress to stand by commitment to financial aid
=================================================
Father Ed Glynn yesterday wrote to leaders of Congress urging them to act on the appropriations bill, already passed but not yet signed into law, that would increase maximum Pell Grants by $500 (to a total of $3,800) and increase funding for other financial aid programs vital to needy college students. With final action on the bill taking place in the next few days, Father Glynn was reacting to news reports that the prescribed funding for education may be cut by as much as $6 billion. The university has also issued an urgent appeal to faculty, students, alumni and all members of the Carroll community to reinforce this message by immediately calling the Congressional leaders (at the phone numbers listed below), as well as their own senators and representatives, and telling them, politely but firmly, to stand by the commitment made to America's college students before the national election.
Representative Dennis Hastert -- Speaker of the House (202) 225-0600
Representative Richard Armey -- House Majority Leader (202) 225-4000
Representative Tom Delay -- House Majority Whip (202) 225-0197
Senator Trent Lott -- Senate Majority Leader (202) 224-3135
Senator Don Nickles -- Senate Majority Whip (202) 225-2708

2. JCU alums, students get in the Christmas-giving spirit
=================================================
Community service runs through many of the activities that take place within the extended JCU community and Christmas certainly is no exception. In Chicago last Sunday, alums and their families celebrated Mass with Father Bill Bichl, enjoyed breakfast with Santa, and collected toys for the "Dream for Kids" organization. In Cleveland this Sunday, alums will do the same, with the toys going to the Cleveland-Nottingham Group for distribution to two local schools. Meanwhile, JCU students, organized by the Campus Activites Board and by Student Life, hosted area children for a whole afternoon's activities that included a visit with Santa.

3. Gift to JCU now can help at tax time
=================================================
Reminders have been going out to alums from the JCU development office reminding them that a gift to the university prior to year's end may come in handy at income tax time, particularly if it's a gift of appreciated stock. 4. Larry Holmes to play in Aztec Bowl ...
=================================================
John Carroll wide receiver Larry Holmes leaves this weekend for Merida, Mexico, where he has been selected by the American Football Coaches Association to play for the Division III all-star team in the 2000 Aztec Bowl on December 16. Holmes, who caught 58 passes for a school
record 950 yards and 11 touchdowns this season to earn First-Team All-OAC honors, follows in the large footsteps of London Fletcher '98, starting middle linebacker for the NFL Super Bowl champion St. Louis Rams.
