Alumni
Events
1. Gray Streaks Luncheon
There will be a Gray Streaks Luncheon (for those alumni who have graduated 50
years ago or more) on Wednesday, February 14 at noon in the O’Connell
Reading room in the Dolan Center for Science and Technology. The featured speaker
for the lunch will be Jim Noffke, Interim Vice President for University Advancement.
Please RSVP by February 12 to Theresa Spada, Alumni and Special Events Coordinator,
at 216-397-3014 or --
tspada@jcu.edu.
2. Alumni Events in Florida
There will be two events for JCU alumni and friends of the University in Florida this March:
Sunday, March 4, 2007 – Naples, FL
Alumni and friends of the University are invited to join Fr. Niehoff, president
of John Carroll University, and Fr. Shannon, special assistant to the president,
for Mass, brunch and a tour of The St. John’s Bible exhibit at the Naples Museum
of Art.
The St. John’s Bible is the first handwritten, hand-illuminated Bible
commissioned since the printing press was invented five centuries ago. In 2008,
John Carroll University will receive the Prophets version that will be bound
in handcrafted leather and each of the seven volumes will be personally signed
by the artist, Donald Jackson.
This gift is coming to John Carroll because Saint
John’s University informed
the CEO of Target Corporation, Bob Ulrich, that in appreciation for Target’s
tremendous generosity to Saint John’s over the years, they intended to give Target
one of the premium editions of The St. John’s Bible. In accepting the offer,
Bob Ulrich indicated that he desired to give this Prophets version to John Pellegrene’s
alma mater, John Carroll University. John Pellegrene ’58 is the retired Executive
Vice President of Target.
Mass
will begin at 10:00 am, followed by brunch and the exhibit tour.
Monday, March
5, 2007 – Ft. Myers, FL
In addition to The St. John’s Bible event, alumni and
friends of the University are invited to come and support the Blue Streaks
Baseball team at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic tournament at the Terry
Park Sports Complex, 3410 Palm Beach Blvd., Ft. Myers, Florida. The Blue Streaks
play a double-header on Monday, March 5 with games at 9:00 am and 12:00 pm
against the Wooster Polytech Institute. Join us after the games at 4:00 pm
for a picnic style reception with the players, coaches and parents at the Extension
Services Building at the Terry Park Sports Complex. Present
from the University will be: Fr. Niehoff, president of JCU; Fr. Shannon, special
assistant to the president; Laurie Massa, Director of Athletics; Tony DeCarlo
and Ryan Daly.

10. JCU Alumni Travel to Vietnam and Cambodia on Service Mission
Two
JCU alumni, Ken DeLuca, PhD ’69, ’70 G, and David Ciampi, PhD, ’81, recently
traveled to Vietnam and Cambodia on a service trip through the American Psychological
Association (APA). Dr. DeLuca, a clinical psychologist who works with children,
adolescents, families and couples, and Dr. Ciampi were part of a group of 70
people who traveled to these two countries as part of an APA initiative, “Psychology
Builds a Healthy World,” which began in 2001. On their trip, Dr. DeLuca and
Dr. Ciampi traveled to both countries in order to meet with students and faculty
at universities, as well as hospital doctors and staff in order to learn about
people’s needs. Through these personal exchanges, information with relation
to psychology was collected and documented on issues such as family and community
structures, education needs, hospital conditions and even effects from war
in both countries in order to offer appropriate aid to struggling areas. (Click
on images to enlarge.)
Some
actions resulting from identifying these needs include sending over psychological
journals to universities, as well as text books and other educational materials
which will aid education and psychological care in Vietnam and Cambodia. Those
who participated in this service trip will continue interacting with key figures
they encountered while overseas and strive to maintain good rapport between
the countries and the U.S. This goal is part of humanitarian initiative called
People to People International, which works to build peace through understanding
with different nations and cultures. Both Dr. DeLuca and Dr. Ciampi are great
examples of how the ideal of service is prominent in the lives of alumni.
11. Three Upcoming Service Opportunities Offered for Alumni
The Center for Community Service is pleased to offer three upcoming service opportunities for alumni:
I. VITA
The Center for Community Service will continue its participation in the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program (VITA) in February of this year. This program helps low-to-moderate income families prepare their income tax returns without paying fees to professional preparers.
John Carroll will be hosting its final “Super Saturday” on February 3 from 9a.m. to 5p.m. On these days, low-wage workers will come to JCU to have their 1040, 1040-A, and 1040EZ forms completed and filed electronically. The Center for Community Service is seeking alumni to volunteer with this program and prepare tax forms for those in need. Volunteer time slots will be set up during those days, and the center is happy to work around people’s availability.
In addition to the two VITA “Super Saturdays,” John Carroll has partnered with the Famicos Foundation to provide volunteers to prepare forms every Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 6-8pm and on the 1st and 3rd Saturday of each month from 11am-2pm from January 20 to April 15.
In order to prepare the forms, volunteers will need to pass a brief certification
exam. Those who are proficient in preparing tax forms can opt to complete the
exam online. For more information about VITA including other VITA site locations,
basic tax questions, and qualification info., local calls can be made to 211.
If you would like to volunteer, please contact Dr. Peggy Finucane, Interim Director,
Center for Community Service, at 216-397-1608 or mfinucane@jcu.edu.
II. Medical Mission Trip to Honduras
Alumni in the medical profession are needed to participate in a medical mission
trip to Honduras May 21-27, 2007. Physicians, eye care professionals, dentists
and pharmacists are needed to join a small team of JCU students in pre-professional
health studies as well as JCU faculty. If you are interested in learning more
about the medical mission trip, please contact Dr.

Association in Cleveland. If you are interested in participating, please contact
