Service

11. Tampa Bay Area Alumni Have Day of Service for Holiday Season

Tampa Bay area alumni. Click to enlarge imageTampa Bay area alumni recently participated in a day of community service. On December 2, a group of graduates and their spouses worked at the Children’s Cancer Center in Tampa. They worked on the landscaping around the building, wrapped Christmas gifts for the Center’s clients and performed other basic maintenance. Bill McGinty ’89 introduced the alumni group to the good work of the Children’s Cancer Center a few years ago.

12. Alumni Needed to Participate in Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program

The Office of Alumni Relations and the Center for Community Service will be participating in the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program (VITA) in January and February of this year. This program helps low-to-moderate income families prepare their income tax returns without paying fees to professional preparers.

John Carroll will be hosting two “Super Saturdays” on January 27 and February 3 from 9a.m. to 5p.m. On these days, low-wage workers will come to JCU to have their 1040, 1040-A, and 1040EZ forms completed and filed electronically. The Center for Community Service is seeking alumni to volunteer with this program and prepare tax forms for those in need. Volunteer time slots will be set up during those days, and the center is happy to work around people’s availability.

In addition to the two VITA “Super Saturdays,” John Carroll has partnered with the Famicos Foundation to provide volunteers to prepare forms every Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 6-8pm and on the 1st and 3rd Saturday of each month from 11am-2pm from January 20 to April 15.

There will be a training session on Saturday, January 20 from 8:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. where volunteers will learn how to prepare the forms. Following the training, there will be a brief certification exam. However, those who are proficient in preparing tax forms can opt to complete the exam online beginning December 15 without attending the training session at http://www.irs.gov/app/vita/index.jsp.

If you would like to volunteer, please contact Dr. Peggy Finucane, Interim Director, Center for Community Service, at mfinucane@jcu.edu or 216-397-1608.

13. JCU Offers Two Upcoming Service Opportunities for Alumni

The Center for Community Service is pleased to offer two upcoming service opportunities for alumni. Alumni in the medical profession are needed to participate in a medical mission trip to Honduras May 21-27, 2007. Physicians, eye care professionals, dentists and pharmacists are needed to join a small team of JCU students in pre-professional health studies as well as JCU faculty. If you are interested in learning more about the medical mission trip, please contact Dr. Peggy Finucane at mfinucane@jcu.edu or Tracee Patterson at tpatterson@jcu.edu. Alumni are also needed to participate in Cultivating Community Outreach Day on April 28th. On this day, alumni, JCU students and community volunteers work together to create a garden and provide basic landscaping for the East 95th St. Neighborhood Association in Cleveland. If you are interested in participating, please contact Dr. Peggy Finucane at mfinucane@jcu.edu.

15. Bill McGinty ’89

Bill McGinty '89Bill McGinty’s accomplishments are many. An ’89 JCU grad, Bill is a successful television news anchor, who just began a new position as an anchor reporter for the 10 o’clock news Monday through Friday at KHQ tv in Spokane, Washington. In addition to his professional success, Bill upholds the Jesuit tradition of service by working with the Tampa Bay Children’s Cancer Center, is dedicated to John Carroll, and is a loving husband and father.

Bill moved to Spokane in December, 2006 to begin his new position. In addition to being an anchor, Bill does special projects reporting and coaches young reporters in the industry. Bill has a long history working in television news. Prior to working in Washington, Bill anchored the Saturday morning news at WTSP in Tampa and also worked in several different capacities at stations in Reno, NV, Rockford, IL, and Alpena, MI.

Beyond his professional success, Bill offers his service by working with the Children’s Cancer Center in Tampa Bay each year with a group of JCU alumni.
