1. John Carroll 'sound bytes' -- and online survey
=================================================
The "Winter 2003" edition of John Carroll magazine is in the mail, with this year's roundup of alumnae and alumni who are "making a difference" in their careers and their communities. You can hear "sound bytes" from two of the alums, John Gilmore '62 and Dr. John Pakiela '94 -- and also link to other digital audio streams from some of the notable public lectures at JCU during the fall semester -- by clicking on the magazine cover at left.

John Carroll magazine also includes a brief readership survey but if you'd prefer to respond online rather than return the paper survey -- and we'd prefer that you respond online, too -- you can do so right now by clicking here.

2. JCU to host US poet laureate, Supreme Court justice
=================================================

Speaking of speakers, they become even more notable this semester with the appearance on January 29 of United States Poet Laureate Billy Collins, whose intellect combined with broad appeal have led many to compare him with Robert Frost; and then, on March 18, of Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scallia. For more information on these and other engagements -- including an Ensemble Theatre retrospective on Barbara Jordan, in recognition of the Martin Luther King Holiday -- click on Public Lectures.

3. Women win in 'new' center; naming ceremony Feb. 1
=================================================

Sophomore forward Megan Heller led the women's basketball team over Heidelberg this week, 70-54, in the newly renovated -- and renamed -- "DeCarlo Varsity Center." A celebration will take place on Saturday (Feb. 1), with tours of the facility, the annual alumni basketball game at 1 p.m., the men's game against Otterbein at 3 p.m., and a ceremony honoring Athletic Director Tony DeCarlo at halftime. More details about the day -- and special web coverage -- to follow. Meanwhile, the Blue Streaks men's basketball and wrestling teams also won this week. Check out all the details under Sports Headlines.

4. Nominate candidates for the Alumni Medal online
=================================================

To date 100 men and women who have distinguished themselves with their service to their career, their community and their university have been honored at Spring Commencement with the Alumni Medal. Nominations for the award come from -- you -- our alumni and alumnae. To nominate someone for the Alumni Medal, click here.

5. Quotable ... Steve Fitzpatrick '92
=================================================

"Now, we can take it one day at a time and work with Jillian to make her whole!"

The speaker is Steve Fitzpatrick '92, and Jillian is his 4-year-old daughter who merited considerable news coverage last year as she suffered from a rare disorder and needed an umbilical cord blood transplant not covered by health insurance. Thanks to a number of alums who responded to Steve's appeal -- including a major donor whose extraordinary generosity made the life-saving procedure possible -- Jillian received the transplant on Nov. 21 at Duke University Medical Center. She left the hospital the day after Christmas and on Tuesday (Jan. 7) the family received the best gift possible -- an analysis of Jillian's blood that determined it was 100 percent donor blood. "This is fantastic news because it means the transplant was a success," Steve explained. "Theoretically Jillian has the 'missing' enzyme in her bone marrow." And now, "one day at a time." To follow what we pray will be Jillian Fitzpatrick's continuing progress, visit the Jill's Fund website.
