1. Celebrating science -- the Carrabine Lab, the Dolan Center, the
Kresge Challenge
=================================================
Many alumni and alumnae will remember John Carrabine '51, who taught chemistry
at Carroll from 1956 until his sudden death in 1990. The model teacher, father
and humanitarian has been memorialized with a computer lab that was dedicated
in a ceremony recently in the Dolan Center for Science & Technology. The brief
presentations, including a warm recollection by son Jim '78, can be heard via
MP3 audio streaming on the JCU
website.
Newly
posted images of the Dolan Center display the dramatic architectural features
that have made the facility an immediate focal point for the campus. See for
yourself by clicking on the image at left. Even as students and professors take
advantage of Dolan's capabilities for study, research and collaboration, the
fundraising effort is reaching a critical point -- December 31, the deadline
for raising the matching gifts needed to secure the nearly $1 million Kresge
Challenge Grant. To learn more about the Kresge Challenge, including its importance
not only to the current capital campaign but to the future of JCU click here.

2. 'Tis the Season,' Part I: Celebrating traditions
=================================================
Speaking of seasons, if it's Thanksgiving it's time for the annual Alumni Mass
& Breakfast -- this Sunday (Nov 23) -- with Mass at 10:30 am at St. John Cathedral
followed by breakfast buffet at the Sheraton Cleveland City Centre. Then in
December (Sunday Dec 14), it's the 11th annual Breakfast with Santa and Toy
Wrapping Party. Get details on both events at Alumni
Events. Meanwhile, classes ending in 4 and 9 met every night last week and
continue to plan for Reunion 2004. Remember, even if you're miles away from
Rodman Hall, you can join your class committee by conference call. Contact Rosalie
Massey.

3. 'Season,' Part II: Blue Streaks move from fall to winter
=================================================
The John Carroll men's soccer team saw its most successful post season ever
come to an end in a 2-0 loss to Dominican yesterday in the third round of the
NCAA Division III championship in Granville (OH). The day before the 14th ranked
Streaks had denied fifth ranked Carnegie-Mellon, 2-1, for their 17th victory
tying a previous season high. The JCU football team endured an agonizing season
finale, losing 17-14 at Capital, as the Crusaders scored touchdowns on the last
play of the first half and late in the fourth quarter. Our cross country teams
also closed out 2003, although three runners -- Shannon McConville, Ellie Fernandez
and Cyril Pinchak -- qualified for individual berths in the NCAA national championships
in Hanover (IN) Saturday (Nov 22). Catch all of the highlights as well as early
winter sports season action by the wrestling and swim teams -- and what mens
basketball Head Coach Mike Moran had to say about the OAC coaches picking his
team to win the conference -- by clicking on Blue
Streaks Sports Headlines.

4. 'Season,' Part III: Fall color on campus
=================================================
Many consider John Carroll the most beautiful college campus in the region,
and many also consider fall our most picturesque season. Sample a "video postcard"
yourself, online.
Just click on "A Fall Postcard." If you haven't already seen them, you can select
video highlights from the dedication of Don Shula Stadium (especially "The Pep
Talk") and the Dolan Center (especially the "Welcome").

5. '72 alum inspires scholarship
=================================================
Steve Burchyns '72, who succumbed to cancer in 2002 after a 28-year career in
the US Diplomatic Security Service, has inspired a new scholarship at JCU targeted
to the children of DSS agents. Recently the Burchyns family gathered at JCU
along with DSS officials and alums from the classes of '72 and '68 to celebrate
establishment of a $400,000 endowment to fund the scholarship. Steve's brother
Ray '68 even brought his business partner. "I wanted him to experience the campus
as I had when I returned (last reunion) after 35 years to a completely transformed
university." Read excerpts from Ray's heartfelt presentation as well as other
highlights from the celebration at Alumni
News.

Retired JCU Vice President William Doug Bookwalter ’60 suffered a fatal heart
attack earlier this month at his Greenford farm near Youngstown (OH). For an
obituary on the former assistant to the president, and for information on other
individuals and events within and around the campus community, visit the website

7. Quotable ... Notable
=================================================
"When you say, 'There's nothing I can do,' what you're really saying is, 'There's
nothing I want to do.'" The speaker was Ireland's Betty Williams, past winner
of the Nobel Peace Prize, explaining to a JCU audience her passion for wanting
to protect the world's children from war and violence. You can hear her, as
well as other recent presenters -- including a Papal Nuncio, a leading Latino
spokesman, "the greatest living Russian poet," Sam Walton's right hand man,
four JCU English profs describing "How I Write," and three women who "know their
place." Just look for the headlines that display an image of computer speakers
under News & Events.
