The JCU women, after defeating Ohio Northern, 62-56, on Monday for their eighth OAC opening round victory in nine years, finally yielded to Baldwin-Wallace Wednesday night, 98-86. Meanwhile, Markita Thompson and Antoine Dunklin lead the women's and men's track teams into the OAC Indoor Championships, and the OAC regular season champion wrestlers get their OAC tourney underway also this weekend at Baldwin-Wallace. Find all of the results for all of the teams under Sports
Headlines. The February 1 ceremony also marked Tony's retirement as athletic director.
But, with Volleyball Coach / Softball Coach / Assistant Athletic Director Gretchen
Weitbrecht taking over as acting director, DeCarlo will continue his development
work on behalf of the university as he wins the support of alums and friends
for construction of Don Shula Stadium, part of John Carroll's $125 million capital
campaign, "Choosing the Greater Good." Centerpiece of the campaign is the Dolan
Center for Science and Technology, which you can see taking shape "live" via
webcam. Justice Scalia is undeniably the most renowned of the speakers with national
and international credentials appearing on campus this year. A number of the
past presentations are already available via audio streaming from the JCU web
site. Just click on "News and Events" and find the headlines with the audio
icon. For example, you can hear Poet Laureate Billy Collins deliver the excellent
reading he gave to a standing-room-only audience by clicking on the audio icon

1. JCU men advance to OAC basketball semis
=================================================
The
men's basketball team, regular season Ohio Athletic Conference co-champion, meets
Ohio Northern at 7:45 p.m. tomorrow (Feb. 28) in a semifinal game of the OAC tournament
at Baldwin-Wallace, following its 90-76 triumph over Marietta last night at Carroll.
To see pictures from the game, and hear a Mike Moran sound bite explaining why
the Streaks head coach considers this the best "team" of his 30-year career, click
on the coach's image (at left).
=================================================
2. Tony DeCarlo to work for 'Choosing the Greater Good'
=================================================
At the beginning of this month during the men's 84-79 victory
over Otterbein, a halftime ceremony officially marked the dedication of "The
Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center." If you missed our live webcast of that event,
you can join the hundreds of other alums who have viewed the instant replay
by clicking on the "video streaming" icon you'll find at the DeCarlo
Varsity Center.
=================================================
3. NCAA Div. III Wrestling Hall of Fame welcomes Kerry Volkmann
'71
=================================================
One of Tony DeCarlo's earliest wrestling stars at Carroll also succeeded him
as head coach of the Blue Streaks' team and now joins him in the NCAA Division
III Hall of Fame. Kerry Volkmann '71 will be inducted on March 6 prior to the
post season championships at Ohio Northern. For a report on Volkmann's illustrious
career as wrestler and coach, visit Sports
Headlines.
=================================================
4. JCU prominent in Jesuit support of March for Life
=================================================
John Carroll sponsored one of the largest contingents from any Jesuit university
participating in the recent March for Life, with 130 traveling to Washington
DC. The National Jesuit News front page for February / March features many of
them sporting their yellow "JCU" stocking caps and quotes Carroll student Rich
Collingwood: "It's great to be at a university that supports this kind of thing."

national web site.

5. See 'Events' for Young Alumni dates, Blue-Gold reverse
raffle, reunion meetings
=================================================
If you want to congratulate NCAA Div. III Wrestling HOF inductee Kerry Volkmann
in person, come to the Blue-Gold Club's Third Annual Reverse Raffle, March 29,
at the reverse raffle "hall of fame," Casa Di Borally Party Center. For details
click on Events. There you'll
also find info on the Young Alumni gathering in Boston this Friday (Feb. 28),
the Young Alumni wine tasting in Cleveland on March 27 and the next reunion
meetings for the "3's" and the "6's" at Rodman Hall -- or at the alum's own
home (via conference call).
=================================================
6. Pittsburgh area alums work to endow scholarship
=================================================
The Pittsburgh area for many years has played a prominent role in the history
of John Carroll and promises to play an even more prominent role in our future
with the establishment of a scholarship for Pittsburgh area students. With $60,000
raised already, 35 alumni leaders met on Tuesday to forge plans on how to reach
their goal of raising a $350,000 endowment. For more information e-mail the
newest father in Alumni / Development, Bob
Castagnero '94. And for a look at Anne Kelly Castagnero, daughter of Bob
and Julie (Smith) '93, see the Birth
Announcements.

7. All's well in OAC swimming: JCU men & women win
=================================================
It may be comforting to know that a bit of normalcy has returned to our troubled
world. Both of the Blue Streaks swim teams again reign as champions of the Ohio
Athletic Conference. The women, after finishing second last year by just 1 1/2
points for the first time since joining the OAC, won by a margin of 60 and 1/2
points. The men, champions in all but two of the Streaks' 14 years in the OAC,
won by 69 points. Swimming Coach Matt Lenhart and Diving Coach Lewis Fellinger
were named coaches of the year. As always, the championships took place in the
conference's top swimming venue, JCU's Johnson Natatorium, refurbished and enhanced
with a grand new entrance. For all of the details, see OAC
Swimming Championships.
=================================================
8. Full house awaits Justice Antonin Scalia
=================================================
Nearly 3,000 people are expected on campus March 18 to hear an address by Supreme
Court Justice Antonin Scalia. That's how many tickets were issued -- on a first-ordered
first-served basis -- to the DeCarlo Varsity Center, where he will speak, and
to the Jardine and Lombardo Student Center conference rooms where closed-circuit
coverage will be displayed on large screens. (Note: People attending the speech
MUST have their tickets. All available tickets HAVE BEEN ISSUED.) We are making
plans to stream the audio following the address from the JCU
web site.
=================================================
9. Alumna to speak on 'Mind, Body and Spirit'
=================================================
Dr. Holly Perzy '85, Medical Director of MetroHealth Clinic and Program Director
for internal medicine and pediatrics at MetroHealth, will present "Mind, Body
and Spirit: How to maintain balance in life to stay healthy" at 6 p.m. on March
20 in the Lombardo Student Center. The program is sponsored by the Alumni Association's
Women's Networking Group. For more information contact Kate
Callahan.
=================================================
10. Graduate School renews 'Celebration of Scholarship'
=================================================
Justice Scalia's visit to JCU highlights a week already notable for "A Celebration
of Scholarship," when a series of events will recognize the scholarly pursuits
of both faculty and student representatives. The celebration was inaugurated
last year by the Graduate School and Office of Faculty Research, Grants and
Development to great acclaim. For a preview of the presentations -- including
Undergraduate Julie Goldyn's research on fellow students' community service
experiences, Professor Nancy Kiefer's national award winning depression era
plays and Staff Member Kevin-Khristian Cosgriff Hernandez's thesis on influencing
public opinion -- click here.

11. Alissa Morgan '02 never lost sight of silver lining
=================================================
Remember when you graduated from Carroll, found yourself dropped from your parents' insurance and perhaps went without health coverage until you secured benefits on your own, all the while hoping that nothing would happen in the meantime? Well, something DID happen to Alissa Morgan '02 in January. Her heart stopped, and by the time everything returned to normal she was left with over $70,000 in medical bills. But when Art History Professor Leslie Curtis contacted his former student, all Alissa could talk about was her GOOD fortune to have nearby co-workers at Republic Bank trained in CPR come to her aid. Ironically, Alumni Association President Nikki Bondi McPolin '72, whose executive recruiting firm, Advantage Partners, is located above the bank, had seen Pepper Pike emergency crews respond. “All of the people in our building gathered spontaneously and offered a prayer,” Nikki said. “Later when I learned she was a Carroll alumna, I stopped in to see her, and she appreciated my visit so much she got tears in her eyes." After a fund was established in her name at the bank and her situation received publicity, the hospital forgave the debt and Alissa is applying the fund toward the remaining expenses she incurred during the crisis.
=================================================
12. Another reason to be 'Committed to Carroll'
=================================================
The sense of community that Alissa Morgan experienced is a big reason why alums
and others are "Committed to Carroll," as the recent video demonstrates. Some
150 e-News subscribers have received their free cassette, leaving about two
dozen copies of the 8 1/2 minute program left. They're available on a first-come
first-served basis at Committed
to Carroll.
=================================================
13. Extended communities mourn 'Rip' Reilly ‘56
=================================================
We have lost one of our most committed -- and colorful -- alums with the passing
last Thursday (Feb. 20) of Raymond "Rip" Reilly '56. It is a loss we share with
the greater Cleveland and Irish American communities for whom Rip was an equally
major presence. Alzheimer's Disease had effectively silenced this prolific communicator,
but son John '86 reported that even recently the sight of an old friend's picture
could still bring back that famously impish grin to Rip's face. In its Sunday
(Feb. 23) edition the Plain Dealer attested to the impact of this unforgettable
man in a prominent obituary you can find online.
=================================================
14. Quotable: 'I think we can all agree that none of us wants war'
=================================================
The expressed hope for peace is heard on many college campuses these days, but
in this case it came from LTC David Hagg, Professor of Military Science at Carroll.
Recalling how the Reserve Officers Training Corps unit he heads has been a "welcome"
part of the university for over 50 years, he noted that he along with the 100
ROTC cadets take their orders ultimately from the country's civilian leaders.
Colonel Hagg (pronounced "Haig") was joined at the noontime meeting by scores
of other faculty members, administrators, students and staff members who called
for a balanced, informed discussion on the Iraq crisis, especially if it does
lead to armed conflict. For more information, click on Iraq.
