1. April 12 Mass, Schola Concert to memorialize Chris Britton '98
=================================================

CPT Christopher Britton '98, 1977-2003Chris Britton '98, who died in the crash of a US Army Black Hawk helicopter out of Fort Drum in New York on March 12, will be remembered in a Month's Mind Mass and Schola Cantorum Concert on Saturday, April 12. The Mass will be celebrated in Saint Francis Chapel at 4 p.m., a reception with the Britton family follows at 5:30 in the Atrium and the concert takes place in the Chapel at 8 p.m. Captain Britton was a founding member of the Schola which has rededicated the previously scheduled event in his honor. It is a Catholic tradition to memorialize an individual one month after the person's death. Hence, the title, Month's Mind. If you would like to attend the reception, please RSVP to Angela Spitalieri.

2. Let's acknowledge all alumni and alumnae in military service
=================================================

There undoubtedly are many Carroll men and women serving in the military at this critical time in the nation's history. If you have any reports (especially with pictures) to relay, or if you simply want alums to keep an individual in their thoughts and prayers, contact Pete Bernardo, Bob Castagnero, Gerry Grim or any person you may already know on the JCU Public Affairs/Alumni/Development staff (1.800.736.2586). Meanwhile, for a Middle East dispatch from Army Captain Sean Connolly '96, recently posted by his class's most able webmaster, Jonathon Boyle, see the '96 website.

3. Hear Holly Perzy '85 on Women and Wellness; next, on Reunion Saturday -- Financial Fitness
=================================================

Former Blue Streaks cheerleader Holly Perzy '85 can still "pump up the crowd," as she demonstrated recently in a presentation on "Women and Wellness" sponsored by the Alumni Association's Women's Network. Hear this accomplished internist-pediatrician for yourself by visiting Alumni News.

Your financial well-being is the subject of the next Women's Network event at JCU on Saturday (June 14) at 2 p.m., featuring Robin Baum '87, first woman managing partner for Zinner & Company LLP, one of the top 20 accounting firms in Northeast Ohio. That's also Reunion Weekend at JCU. For the complete schedule of events -- plus online access to "Rosalie's Reunion Reservations" -- click on the Reunion website.

4. Jesuit lecture series in Pittsburgh leads 'Events'
=================================================

Alums in Pittsburgh will find out why "It's Tough to be a Catholic," from Bishop Donald Wuerl tomorrow (Apr. 3). Later in the month (April 27) they'll celebrate Mass (& breakfast) with Father Ed Glynn SJ. In Cleveland, donors who contributed to scholarship funds or initiated their own will join scholarship recipients at a dinner on campus April 8. Philanthropy is also the objective for the Class of '98 dinner at Casa Di Borally Party on April 12 when they'll gather to make final plans for Reunion 2003 and help build their class gift at the same time. Get all of the details of these and other events -- including the month-long "April Showers" drive by 'ALUMS' -- at the Alumni Calendar of Events.

And, with Old Person Winter finally relaxing his/her icy grip, you may want to save these golf dates: July 14, for the Duffers Day outing at Fowlers Mill just east of Cleveland (e-mail Gerry Grim '69); and September 15 for the Chicago outing (e-mail Jane Rodriguez).

5. For retirees, ILVC is now in Cleveland and midwest region
=================================================

The Ignatian Lay Volunteer Corps (ILVC) targets retired or semi-retired men and women with the opportunity to serve the needs of the poor, to work for a more just society, and to grow in deeper Christian faith by reflecting and praying in the Ignatian tradition. Founded in 1995 by Father Jim Conroy '68 and a fellow Jesuit in the Maryland Province (then headed by Father Ed Glynn SJ), ILVC was introduced to the midwest region last year by Rev. Jack Dister SJ, Director and Detroit Provincial Assistant for Social and Retreat Ministries and a former faculty member at JCU. One of the first from the Carroll community to volunteer has been History Professor Emeritus Mary Kay Howard, who contributes her skills to the Cleveland Sight Center. Volunteers can also be found at the University Settlement, the Central City Ministry, and the West Side Catholic Center. Information sessions about ILVC will be held on April 28 from 2–4 pm at the Jesuit Retreat House in Parma and on May 5 from 2-4 pm in Gesu Church's McAuley Hall, across from JCU. Contact Cleveland coordinator Cathy Duer at 216.621.7737 or visit the ILVC website.

=================================================
6. Online reservations now available for Reunion '03 (June 12-15)
=================================================

Those alums from '98 aren't the only ones making plans for June 12-15. All of the classes from the "3's" and "8's" continue to meet, but you don't necessarily have to make your way to Rodman Hall to participate. You can have a place at the conference room table via telephone. Check the "Events" link above for your class's next scheduled meeting and then e-mail Reunion Coordinator Rosalie Massey to arrange the conference call. And for all of the information on Reunion, plus the online reservation form, visit the Reunion website.

=================================================
7. Astronaut Carl Walz to give Commencement Address May 18
=================================================

If you attended Commencement last May, you heard Astronaut Carl Walz express his gratitude at receiving the Alumni Medal in a message transmitted from the International Space Station as it orbited the Earth. This year Colonel Walz, who earned a master's degree at JCU in 1979, will be here in person as the Commencement Speaker on May 18. You can still see him as he floated in space with his JCU banner and described how important his Carroll education has been to his career. Click on Message from Space.

8. Belated post cards from Spring Break

=================================================

Spring Break traditionally has meant trips to sunny beaches, but many Carroll students spent their time in places like Hough, Brooklyn and Big Ugly (in West Virginia) where they helped on community projects, shared experiences with community members -- and saved the money they would have invested in sun-block. See "post cards" from Spring Break.

=================================================
9. 'Celebration of Scholarship' stars alum, students, profs -- and a Supreme Court justice

=================================================

The presentation by Holly Perzy served as the culminating event in Carroll's second annual "Celebration of Scholarship," a week-long schedule of presentations by students, faculty and outside experts like Holly focusing attention on the academic research that takes place at JCU. View some images from the week's events and click on a link to more information at News and Events.

Dr. Perzy was in good company, since the event that had kicked off the Celebration of Scholarship was an address by US Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia to an audience that filled the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center. Read the report on his presentation.

10. Notable/quotable ... the legacy of Walter Sutowski

=================================================

"Ingenious craftsman in machine and product design, a leader in the stamping industry, whose inventiveness is part of the Cleveland tradition; whose generosity and friendship inspire our deepest gratitude ...." reads the plaque placed in the lobby of Sutowski Hall in 1982 in honor of Walter Sutowski, who died Thursday (Mar. 27) at 93. That extraordinary generosity had been inspired not by any direct connection with Carroll, but by his esteem for the JCU alums he hired and otherwise came in contact with, and by his respect for the values fostered by the university, thus attesting to the oft-repeated observation of our current president, Father Ed Glynn SJ: "The most eloquent public testimony to our tradition of educational excellence can be found in the lives of our graduates."
