1. The Kresge Foundation grants an award -- and a challenge
=================================================
The
Dolan Center for Science and Technology is on schedule to open for the fall
semester this year and the largest construction project in our history already
is focusing national attention on the university. The Kresge Foundation, one
of the most prestigious philanthropic organizations in the country, has awarded
us a challenge grant of $950,000. The "challenge" means that we will receive
the award only if we raise the remaining $7 million needed for the Dolan Center
from a broad base of alumni and alumnae by January 1, 2004. As hundreds of alums
spread the word to gain support, you can find out more about "The Kresge Challenge"
-- and the rest of the capital campaign, "Choosing the Greater Good" -- right
now by clicking here.
Not only will completion of the Dolan Center give us a more prominent spot on
the higher education map, securing this award will put us in better position
for future funding, both from The Kresge Foundation and from other sources that
use it as a benchmark in evaluating programs.

2. A new look for "www.jcu.edu"
=================================================
By the time you read this you may have already noticed a new look to our university
website (www.jcu.edu). The previous front page, designed by Matt Donner '00,
served us well. But now we're trying to give the visitor direct access from
the initial screen to many more points within the website. Hence the "web menus"
down the left side and across the top, which reveal direct links as the mouse
hovers over each entry. The headlines in the center of the screen also provide
one-click access to the most recent news items. The menu in the gold bar across
the top identifies "alumni" and our other major constituents (prospective students,
current students and FSA). It puts us in position for future improvements, such
as the introduction of portals that can be tailored to each constituency and
customized by each user. So the new look only represents the beginning of continual
website enhancements. As the saying goes, "Watch
this space."

3. Four to receive Alumni Medal at Commencement; Alumni Service,
Silver Quill awards announced
=================================================
In our last e-News transmission, we reported on this year's Commencement speaker,
Astronaut Carl Walz MS '79, but there are other alumni and alumnae who will
share the spotlight that weekend.
Receiving our highest award, the Alumni Medal, at Commencement will be Chuck
Heaton '38, one of Cleveland's most respected sportswriters of all time; Bill
Sweeney '48, longtime member of the President's Forum and supportive neighbor
of JCU; George Wasmer '58, inspiration for Wasmer Field; and Martha Walther
'76, retired US Marine Corps LTC and now VP for NYC's Triborough Bridge & Tunnel
Authority.
At the Alumni Reception and Dinner on Friday evening, May 16, the Alumni Service
Award will be presented to Lawrence Kennard '68, Charles Beringer '75 and Nicole
St. Marie '94 for their dedicated volunteer efforts, and Nancy Agacinski '79
will receive the Silver Quill award as outstanding class columnist.

4. More 'sound bites' -- from John Carroll magazine
=================================================
The Spring 2003 edition of John Carroll magazine is on its way to your mailbox
with compelling comments from students and professors about mentoring, in which,
as University Editor Jerry Pockar describes, "one who is further along (a common
path) is willing to coach and serve as a role model to the one not as far along."
Click here to
hear a "sound byte" from one of the numerous mentors students are finding at
JCU, as well as equally brief audio segments from two other features, and then
read the full stories in the magazine, which is also available online.
In fact, if you didn't do so a few months ago, you can still tell us what you
think of the magazine and what you'd like to see in it by completing our quick,
online
survey.

5. Alumni events for Easter week ... and beyond
=================================================
Coming up next week: The baseball team meets Mount Union in a doubleheader at
Jacobs Field (Apr 23), the Young Alumni ('93-'02) meet for Happy Hour (Apr 25),
alums in Pittsburgh join Father Ed Glynn for Mass and Breakfast (Apr 27), and
the reunion classes (3's and 8's) continue their preparations for Reunion. In
the last e-News we mentioned Duffer's Day (July 14) and the Chicago Golf Outing
(Sep 15), but there are two more tee dates: Golf Outing Fore Women (Jun 16)
and the Athletic Department's annual classic (Aug 4). Don't forget those little
bars of soap and other travel toiletries for the "April Showers" drive for the
homeless, and watch for more details on ALUMS' "NYC Cleanup" in May (May 3)
-- all at Alumni Events.

6. Peter Paul & -- the Ohio Legislature???
=================================================
When three JCU students traveled to the Ohio Statehouse recently to lobby for
financial aid programs, they also met a living legend, Peter Yarrow of Peter
Paul & Mary. The singer received an award from the Ohio House of Representatives
for his longtime activism on behalf of social justice and then performed a song
for the occasion, "Don't Laugh at Me." He actually had the House members join
in with him for the final refrain -- thus inspiring what may have been the most
harmonious legislative session ever held. Alas, the JCU students, though well-informed
on legislative issues affecting higher education, were somewhat weaker on the
category of Sixties Folk Music Stars. They didn't know who Peter Yarrow was,
but they happily posed with him nonetheless. You can see the picture that most
alums of a certain vintage would undoubtedly hang over their mantels had they
been in it -- right here.

7. 'Rusted Root' concert set for Apr 27
=================================================
As the spring semester winds down, a lot of students may have music on their
minds, with Rusted Root coming to campus on April 27. (See brief report.
And for a look at what it's like these days to have a major musical performance
at Carroll, you can view a brief video streaming clip of last year's "MTV Campus
Invasion" right here.

8. Notable/quotable ... On becoming a hero
=================================================
Alums joined members of the JCU campus community last Saturday (Apr 12) at a
Mass and later at a concert in memory of Chris Britton '98, who died in an Army
helicopter crash a month earlier. They heard a moving eulogy by Marty Hoehler
'99, who likened Chris to a "super hero." "It’s when I think of the good Chris
would have done, as a soldier, a teacher, a father, that I feel a hole," Marty
said. "And I realize there is only one way to fill that hole. Every person that
loved Chris must step up, and do a share of that extra good ourselves. We must
become heroes to others and to ourselves." Click here
for the full text of Marty's eulogy along with brief coverage of the concert.
