1. Graduates of all ages take center stage at Commencement
=================================================

Commencement is Sunday, May 18As always, alumni and alumnae have major roles Commencement weekend, beginning with the awards dinner Friday (May 16) at 6 p.m. in honor of Alumni Medalists Chuck Heaton '38, Bill Sweeney '48, George Wasmer '58, Martha Walther '76; Service Award winners Larry Kennard ’68, Charlie Beringer ’75 and Nicole St. Marie ’94; Silver Quill columnist Nancy Agacinski ’79; and Senior Service Award winners from this, our newest class of alums -- Nicholas Detore, Katie Gannon, Jennifer Gardner, Melissa Kocurko and Ann Ortega '03.

Then on Sunday (May 18), graduates from 1953 and earlier years will lead the order of march to the Quad and Rodman Hall terrace for the noontime Commencement ceremonies, with Astronaut Carl Walz MS '79 the honored speaker. For the complete Commencement schedule and "rain plan" information, visit the Commencement website.

If the weather looks questionable on Sunday morning, check the JCU website after 9 a.m. when the decision will be made as to where Commencement will take place -- outdoors or indoors. As soon as possible after all of these events, coverage will be posted on the JCU website.

2. Distinguished Faculty Award goes to 'The Fish Man'
=================================================

Another highlight of Commencement is the presentation of the Distinguished Faculty Award to a professor who embodies excellence in teaching as well as research and in service to the community. This year's recipient is Biology Professor Miles Coburn, known as "The Fish Man" for his study of freshwater fishes and urban streams. Earlier he was recognized by his students and colleagues at a reception in Schott Atrium. You can listen to his brief remarks -- and get an idea of how infectious his enthusiasm is -- at News and Events.

Other faculty members recognized in recent weeks are Andrew Welki, Assistant Professor of Economics, who received the Wasmer Teaching Award -- for the third time; Barbara D'Ambrosia, Associate Professor of Mathematics and Computer Science, who received the Lucrezia Culicchia Award for Teaching Excellence; and Nicholas Santilli, Chairman of Psychology, who was named an American Council on Education (ACE) Fellow for the 2003-2004 academic year.

3. JVI beckons Julia Hoying '03 to Nicaragua
=================================================

Did you have a job waiting for you after graduation? In today's economy, the immediate future is uncertain for some of the women and men who will receive their diplomas Sunday at Carroll. However Julia Hoying is not one of them. In August she will join Jesuit Volunteers International in Nicaragua where she will spend the next two years working with troubled youth in an educational setting. That's not to say she's without other challenges, however. To learn more about this "woman for others," click here.

4. The website: We asked what you thought -- and you told us!
=================================================

When we posted the new front page to the web site, we offered visitors a link to tell us "What I think of this site" -- and did they ever tell us! "I love the new site ... I hate it ... This site was much easier and quicker to navigate before ... Information is much easier to access now ... Too busy! ... Too bland! There need to be more links on this page ... Wow, at long last, my alma mater has a real website, its clean, professional look suggestive of a first-class university competing with the best anywhere!! ... Cheesy, tacky. Do you sell computers or Jesuit Education? ... I love the new design of the site ... Honestly, I think this new page looks like crap ...."

The -- uh, feedback -- is still coming in, and we'll certainly take it into consideration. To be honest, though, there's no going back. Before, we had about 15 direct links from the front page. Now we have about 100 more than that, along with the ability to change them much more efficiently.

Meanwhile, to those who include their e-mail address, we're trying to respond directly. But to several who complained anonymously about "the very large blue and grey borders on the right and bottom" -- you may have your screen display set higher than 800X600, the most often used ratio for which the page was designed. Try 800X600. And to those who charged us with "browser bias" -- let us assure you the page was tested by our professional web developer on both Internet Explorer and Netscape, and even Mozilla, too, browsers used by the vast majority. Indeed, for those with outdated versions (Netscape 4.7, for example), some features may not look right or function properly, but the experience of these users at most websites generally is going to be less than satisfying. Finally, to visitors who observed that the entire site still lacks uniformity -- how right you are! We have a lot to do. This will always be a work-in-progress. For a look at how lower-level sites can work with the new front page, click here.

5. Reunion is less than a month away!
=================================================

If your class year ends in "3" or "8" there is something important that you need to do right now. Check your personal calendar to make sure you've reserved June 12-15 for Reunion at JCU. If you haven't made plans yet, call Reunion Coordinator Rosalie Massey (216.397.3014) or, better yet, check out the schedule and the different packages available and make your reservation at our online Reunion headquarters. If you can't be there in person, you can be there in support by contributing to your Class Gift -- right here. Regardless of class year, all alums are welcome to stop by for the music and dancing that follow dinner on both Friday and Saturday nights.

=================================================
6. Fore! -- actually, five -- golf dates on 'summer tour'
=================================================

Here's another golf date for those who like to hit the links especially with other alums: On September 8 the Jesuits of Ohio and Michigan host an 18-hole scramble in Clarkson, Michigan. You may already have noted the Golf Outing Fore Women (Jun 16), Duffer's Day (July 14) and the Athletic Department's annual classic (Aug 4), all in the Cleveland area; and the Chicago Golf Outing (Sep 15). Get all of the information right here.

7. The season goes on for Blue Streaks track stars
=================================================

Senior Beth Gryzbowski will be on her way to the NCAA Division III track and field championships May 22-24 at St. Lawrence College to defend her women's outdoor high jump title. Two more seniors, Antoine Dunklin and Charles Chaney, will try to secure their NCAA berths by competing in the North Central meet this weekend in Chicago. Last weekend at the OAC championships Dunklin won the 400-meter dash and Chaney repeated as javelin champion as the Blue Streaks came within one-tenth of a point (64.67-64.59) of taking the Men's OAC All-Sports Trophy away from Mount Union. Dunklin, along with Eric Biro, also competes on both 4X100 and 4X400 relay teams with NCAA potential. For more details, plus timely results of this weekend's competition, visit Sports Headlines.
