UNIVERSITY NEWS

1. The Dolan Center - and JCU education - turn heads

Turner Construction's Bill Heywood next to the completed East Wing of the Dolan Center. The Dolan Center for Science and Technology is already making heads turn as it nears completion for dedication weekend (Sep 5-6). Impressive though it may be, however, the true significance of the $66.4 million building will remain in the enhanced learning and research experiences that already take place at JCU. A prime example can be found in a recent article in the Cleveland Plain Dealer's Sunday Magazine. It describes how Biology Professor Cyrilla Wideman and Psychology Professor Helen Murphy involve undergraduate students in their interdisciplinary research on the circadian rhythms that dictate our body's wake-sleep cycle. Read it for yourself, right now, online.

Meanwhile, the first departments have started to move into the completed East Wing of the Dolan Center already, as you can see at News & Events.

The university received more glowing publicity -- from a national audience -- in a 5-page article by Accountancy's Jerry Weinstein and Karen Schuele published in the Journal of Accountancy. Read about the department's programs in "Practitioners as Mentors."

Jerry Weinstein also teamed with Rob Bertrand '94 and colleagues Bob Bloom and Bill Cenker to publish a Lybrand Gold Medal award-winning article in the Management Accounting Quarterly entitled "Executive Compensation: Stock Options with Reload Features." Read a capsule summary (MAQ subscribers can download the entire article).

2. More fond memories of Henry Birkenhauer SJ

Following the special issue of e-News (Jun 16) on the death of Henry Birkenhauer SJ, several alums responded with more memories of the former JCU president ... offering rides home at holiday breaktime, car-pooling to away games, sharing his excitement for science -- and his love for God. Click here to read about JCU's "kindest man."

EVENTS COMING UP

4. Playing golf next Monday?

There's still time to get in a foursome for Duffers Day on Monday (Jul 14) at Fowlers Mill. Call Gerry Grimm '69 at 216.397.3022. For more details on that as well as three other golf outings scheduled for Aug 4 (Athletics Department event in Cleveland), Sep 8 (Ignatian Invitational in Michigan) and Sep 15 (Chicago), see Alumni Events.

5 . Interested in a winter hiatus?

It's not too early to think about next winter -- and how to break winter's icy grip. One good way would be to join the Tahiti Alumni Tour (Feb 27-Mar 9), but in order to make the Polynesian cruise, you'll need to place a deposit by Aug 31. For more information call Darlene Nelson at 1.440.423.1460 or send an e-mail.

6. John DiCillo retires

John DiCillo, an assistant football coach in the 70's who returned to Blue Streaks athletics in the mid-80's, has retired. For more information on his career, visit Athletics' Daily Update.

7. Blue-Gold Club offers personalized address labels

For more convenience when you have to use "snail-mail," personalized address labels are available that sport the Blue-Gold Club and JCU logos. The offer was initiated by Dominic Piunno '95, with proceeds benefiting the Blue-Gold Club. Click on "mailing labels" at the club's website.
