THE NEXT BIG THING
1. Dolan Center debut draws near
Final
preparations are taking place in and around the Dolan Center for Science & Technology
to make it ready for the start of Fall Semester September 2 and then Dedication
Weekend September 5-6. Friday's events (Sep 5) include tours of the $66.4 million
facility that is literally transforming John Carroll University. There will
also be a ribbon-cutting ceremony and an outdoor light show extravaganza. The
dedication ceremony highlights Saturday evening (Sep 6) and is followed by a
special-invitation dinner. For more information, including a tour you can take
online that will whet your appetite for the grand opening, look for the icon
of the Dolan Center on the JCU website, or just click here.

PERKS / OPPORTUNITIES / EVENTS
2. Consider a club in Cleveland, a trip to Tahiti
Right now JCU graduates living near or traveling to Cleveland can belong to
a trendy social / athletic / business club for a fraction of the normal cost.
Until Sep 19 alumnae and alumni can join The Club at Key Center, located in
the heart of downtown, for an initiation fee of $150 rather than the customary
$1,200. For information on the "perks" you'll receive -- such as privileges
at over 200 prestigious golf / country clubs, elegant business clubs and world-renowned
resorts -- contact Danica Savchuk by phone (216.241.1272) or by e-mail.
Speaking of resorts, that Tahiti Alumni Cruise (Feb 27-Mar 9) will put in at
several -- Tahiti, Moorea, Tuamotu Atolls, Marquesas Islands, Rangiora, Raiatea
and Bora Bora. But remember, your deposit is due by Aug 31. Contact Darlene
Nelson by phone (440.423.1460) or by e-mail.
3. Athletics golf outing: Luc(k) on the links?
And speaking of golf, Walter Luc '69 left no doubt as to who was "closest to
the pin" at the annual Blue-Gold Athletics Department golf outing (Aug 4) when he scored a hole-in-one on No. 11 at Bridgewater. Rather than uh-"luck,"
you might call it sweet justice -- Walter has participated in the event since
its inception a decade ago as "The Football & Wrestling Coaches Outing." For
more information other highlights from this event, as well as the annual Duffers
Day Classic last month (Jul 14) at Fowlers Mill, where the Scramble Team Trophy
went to the team of the 80's -- Luigi Pecoraro ‘83, John Grazia ‘86, Tom Powers
‘87 and Tim Armagno ‘80, click here.
Next on the links calendar is the Ignatian Invitational (consider yourself invited)
Sep 8 at Shepherd's Hollow in Clarkston, Michigan, and the Chicago golf outing
Sep 15 at the Evanston Golf Club. For more starting times and other info, click
on Events.

PHILANTHROPY
4. Blue-Gold Club does some heavy lifting for Shula Stadium
Athletics' golf outing generated $10,000 toward a $150,000 check
that members of the Blue-Gold Club will present to Father Ed Glynn during the
home opener (Sep 6) against Thiel. The club's gift will help pay for the weight
room that will be part of the athletics complex in Don Shula Stadium. The halftime
presentation will provide a taste of what the Homecoming celebration on Sep
27 will be like when the facility is dedicated -- and Ohio Northern is the opponent.
For a glimpse of Shula Stadium under construction, see News
& Events.

COMMUNITY SERVICE / MILITARY SERVICE
5. Catholic Campaign -- and JCU --
help 'brake the cycle' of poverty
JCU's Center for Community Service hosted cyclists making their way across Ohio
late last month on a tour sponsored by the Catholic Campaign for Human Development
to focus attention on poverty and how to help individuals "brake the cycle"
of poverty. For more information see the university's news
release.
6. Students in Free Enterprise
see stars, blue ones, at Wal-Mart
JCU's Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) chapter has developed a product that
Wal-Mart is selling nationwide. It's a plastic, cling-on "Blue Star" that signifies
one's support for a family member -- or anyone, for that matter -- serving in
the nation's armed forces. For more information read the JCU news
release.

7. President Bush's Council on Bioethics commissions research by JCU prof
"If the early embryo is really to be treated as a being who deserves serious
respect, you would think that we would at least know how many embryos are routinely
frozen, discarded, or otherwise lost through IVF (In Vitro Fertilization) ...
The fact that until recently we knew almost nothing about the numbers or the
dispositions of frozen embryos highlights just how unregulated the world of
reproductive medicine is." The observation by Religious Studies Professor Paul
Lauritzen was part of his presentation to President Bush's Council on Bioethics
recently in Washington DC. For the text of his presentation and of the research
study he was commissioned by the council to make on the ethics of stem cell
research, visit the Religious
Studies News.

OBITUARY
8. In appreciation of Bill Dempsey
William F. Dempsey '47, who died on August 5, will be missed by his classmates.
They looked forward to his class columns in John Carroll Magazine and even the
fundraising calls he faithfully made for his university. Bill Dempsey will also
be missed by everyone in Alumni, Development and Public Affairs on the third
floor in Rodman Hall. We were cheered by his company, nourished by his bagels
and amazed at his energy. As a token of our gratitude, we awarded Bill the Alumni
Service Medal a few years ago. But a more fitting tribute would be to live our
twilight years as he did, ignoring the nagging infirmities of age and worrying
about others more than himself.
