1. Timothy Shannon SJ named VP-Development & Alumni Relations
=================================================
Timothy
Shannon SJ has been named Vice President for Development and Alumni Relations.
The native Clevelander, a graduate of St. Ignatius, will join JCU in September
after completing his Jesuit Tertianship in Australia. For more information see
@JCU, an electronic newsletter posted monthly for the JCU campus.
There you'll also find a warm reflection by longtime Accountancy staffer Ethel
Epstein, who was inducted as an honorary member of Alpha Sigma Nu, the Jesuit
honor society, along with Pete Bernardo '67 and Shirley Seaton. To open up a
PDF of @JCU click on "January 2004 edition" at the @JCU
website.

2. Calling for Alumni Medal nominations -- by Feb 10
=================================================
Do you know alums who have given distinguished service to their profession,
lived an exemplary personal life, made extraordinary contributions to the community,
or demonstrated outstanding leadership on behalf of the university and the Alumni
Association? Even better, do they fulfill all four of these criteria? If so,
please consider nominating them for an Alumni Medal -- no later than Feb 10.
You can do it online right now -- and find out more information, including audio
highlights of last year's ceremony -- by visiting the new Alumni
Medal web page.

3. Hear how Math Prof Chuck Geschke co-founded Adobe ... & other
talks
=================================================
Do you remember a mathematics instructor at Carroll named Charles Geschke. Did
you know he went on to acquire a PhD in the brand new academic discipline of
computer science, become a researcher in the brand new field of personal computers,
and co-found Adobe Systems, one of the pioneer companies in the brand new industry
of software development?
Chuck Geschke returned to campus recently to share his experiences with the
Carroll community in a presentation in Donahue Auditorium. You can hear him
via audio streaming on the JCU website along with other "voices" such as those
of John Ettorre '80 as he lectured a Communications class on blogging, and Georgetown's
Tony Moore, as he gave an extraordinary witness to the Carroll community on
Ignatian Day. Just look for the headlines with this icon
of
computer speakers on the News
& Events page.
=================================================
4. Scott Koebel '97 hopes to work this summer in Bangkok
slums
=================================================
The community service aspirations of a Grove City (OH) area alum drew news coverage
recently when the Columbus Dispatch reported on the plans of Scott Koebel '97
to spend his vacation next summer volunteering in Thailand in partnership with
the Human Development Foundation, established over 30 years ago by Father Joe
Maier to assist the poor in Bangkok. To find out more information about Scott's
"adventure for others," visit Alumni
News.
=================================================
5. Alumni 'Events' feature Chicago & Reunion
=================================================
Young alumni in the Chicago area will be gathering on at Finley Dunnes on Feb
24. See Alumni
Events for a contact. Meanwhile the classes ending in "4" and "9" continue
to plan for Reunion 2004, Jun 18-20. Now your class page is about 3 clicks closer
to the top of the JCU website. Click on "Alumni & Friends" at the top of the
JCU home page ... and then
on "Your Class."
=================================================
6. Remembering George Dalton '55, a true Blue Streaks legend
=================================================
The term "legend" has become over-used in recent years, but it certainly defined
George Dalton '55, the highest scoring basketball player in Carroll history,
who died recently. Read the obituary
by Sports Information Director Chris Wenzler '90. Chris also strives to post
highlights of every Blue Streaks game, match and meet within a short time of
the event's conclusion. From the top
page click on "Student Life, Athletics" and then "Daily Update, Headlines"
or just bookmark this page.
One such headline last week featured Mark Hawald as OAC Wrestler of the Week,
perhaps leading some to wonder if the '77 Hall of Famer has struck some kind
of Faustian deal. But the current Hawald star is his son, whose team-leading
22 victories this season already places his career total 16th on the all-time
standings for Carroll's vaunted program.
