1. We're trialing a new system for transmitting e-News ...
=================================================
This issue of e-News comes to you by way of a new e-mail product we're trialing
that takes advantage of the Banner enterprise database system JCU has been painstakingly
implementing over the last 3 years. We send out e-News every few weeks on an
"as needed" basis, with brief items that generally include links to the JCU
website or other resource for more information, often multimedia in content.
Up to now we've been using a list that had to be maintained separately and as
a result was not always up-to-date. To those who may have "opted out" of that
list, we must ask that you follow the instructions at the bottom of this message
so we can add a new permanent code to your Banner record insuring that you do
not receive e-News in the future.

2. NCAA championships feature men's basketball team -- swimmers
& wrestlers, too
=================================================
For
the second straight year the men's basketball team has reached the "Sweet 16"
in the NCAA Div III championship tournament. The Streaks meet Maryville College
of Tennessee at 6 pm Friday (Mar 12) in Wooster (OH). Visit the JCU
website to hear a classic soundbite from Head Coach Mike Moran as he sized
up his team's chances entering the post season.
In swimming, Lindsey Meier qualified for the NCAA Div III championships (200,
500, 1650 freestyle) beginning Thursday (Mar 11) in St. Peters (MO), as did
Matt Dorsch for the men's competition (50, 100, 200 freestyle) which follows
one week later (Mar 18). The two All America candidates were crucial, of course,
in helping Carroll capture both men's and women's Ohio Athletic Conference Swimming
& Diving Championships.
Speaking of All Americans, Streaks wrestlers Mark Hawald (174 pounds) and Derek
Ankney (285 pounds) earned that lofty status at the NCAA Div III championships
last weekend in Iowa where they led Carroll to a 12th place finish in the 58-team
field. Mark '05 Hawald has now matched another achievement of his father, Mark
'77 Hawald, to go with an earlier
milestone.
F or more details on these and other Streaks exploits -- did we mention Jon
Franks' unanimous selection to the 2004 Academic All-OAC Basketball Team or
the early season victories for the baseball, softball and tennis teams? -- check
JCU
Sports Information.

3. A chance to shoot hoops for students & charity ... & catch a
concert ... at JCU
=================================================
Remember when you felt guilty about playing basketball instead of studying?
On April 3 you can shoot hoops in JCU's intramural gym and actually help students
fulfill a course project at the same time. The advanced public relations class
taught by advertising executive and part-time lecturer Sara Stashower is hosting
a 3-on-3 basketball tournament for the benefit of the Leukemia and Lymphona
Society. Prizes for the top male, female and co-ed team. Entrance fee of $20
per team due by Mar 26. For a registration form e-mail Christine
Lewton or Courtney Kingsbury.
One week later (Apr 2) it's the concert of the year, starring Ben Folds, at
8 pm in the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center. For more information visit the JCU
Student Union's concert
website. Beginning March 15 you can also purchase your ticket at a special
rate of $10 online
if you use this special code: F9J76T
=================================================
4. It's Gold-Blue raffle time
again!
=================================================
That is, the annual Blue-Gold Club Reverse Raffle, for the benefit of JCU athletes.
It takes place next Saturday (Mar 20). For information on the grand prize and
everything else, check out Alumni
Events.
=================================================
5. Quotable ... Notable ... Streamable
=================================================
Three of the many guest speakers at John Carroll this semester explored the
reality of the Middle East in different ways, and you can sample all three through
audio streaming on the JCU website: "Reconciliation in the Global Agenda?" by
Father Robert Schreiter, an internationally known authority on the subject;
"Where Do We Go From Here in Iraq and the Middle East?" by Shibley Telhami,
delivering the Paul Woelfl SJ Lecture in Public Policy; and "The Military Journalist,"
by USMC Major Riccoh Player, former aide to Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld,
speaking to Richard Hendrickson's Communications class. Just look for the "image"
of the audio speakers
next to the headlines on the News
& Events website.
Still to come:
Mar 16, Lobna "Luby" Ismail, on "Building Cultural Confidence
in Understanding Arab Americans and Muslim Americans;" Mar 18, Zev Weiss, CEO
of American Greetings Corp, in a Mellen Series lecture;
Mar 18, William Kelly of Yale in a Mitsui Distinguished Lecture, with the Japanese
Consul to the US expected to be in attendance;
Mar 19, nationally known expert on Islam John Esposito, as JCU inaugurates the
Bediüzzaman Said Nursi Chair in Islamic Studies and recognizes Zeki Saritoprak
as its first holder;

in Italian Studies, honoring the LoPresti family;

9. Mourning Richard Clancey '54, David Benacci '76
=================================================
The extended university community is mourning the death of Richard W. Clancey
'54, Professor of English and a sterling presence at JCU for more than half
a century. Those fortunate enough to study under Dick Clancey will recall a
man who melded flawless scholarship with lively wit, a professor who made the
deadest 18th century poet come alive, a gentleman whose vast knowledge -- dispensed
in asides that were lectures in themselves -- epitomized the ideals of a liberal
education. For more information on his wake (Mar 12) and funeral Mass (Mar 13),
plus a warm remembrance by longtime colleague and friend, David LaGuardia, visit
the JCU
website.
Among the alumni and alumnae we've lost recently was David Benacci '76, whose
family and friends packed cavernous Gesu Church to say good-bye to "such a good
man," as celebrant Jack White SJ put it. For more of Father White's reflection
as well as that of brother Richard, along with the prayer that sustained David,
Nancy '77 and the entire Benacci community, visit the Alumni
website.
