1. Preview for May 23: 4 Alumni Medal winners & the Commencement speaker
=================================================

The Alumni Medal is the Alumni Association's highest awardTo recognize distinguished careers, exemplary family and personal life, contributions to the community, and leadership service to the University and the Alumni Association, John Carroll annually awards the Alumni Medal during Commencement exercises. This year (May 23) the high honor goes to Al DeGulis '56, Beverly Hawk '75, Don Kuratko '74 and Bishop Edward Pevec M'56. For more information visit the Alumni website. There you can also click on a "sound bite" that hints at the inspiration graduates are sure to find in the words of this year's Commencement speaker, Greg Boyle SJ, the "Homeboy Priest," who has been working to reclaim youth in the nation's "gang capital," East Los Angeles.

Of course, leading Father Boyle and everyone else in the grand march will be alums celebrating 50 years or more since graduation.

2. Some key events prior to Commencement
=================================================

This Saturday (Apr 17) the Office of Multicultural Affairs, in conjunction with Alumni Relations, will host "Forever JCU," featuring a campus tour, panel discussion and dinner for alums and students of color at JCU. Find more details, including how to reserve your place, at Alumni Events.

On Tuesday evening, Alumni Relations will host the Spring Senior Social from 6-7:30 pm in the LSC conference room, an excellent chance for alums to welcome "soon-to-be" alums. E-mail Patricia Callahan.

3. And then ... Reunion 2004!
=================================================

Barely 2 months away, Reunion 2004 (June 18-20) beckons the "4s" and the "9s" along with alums from any class year who, if they find themselves in the vicinity of campus on Friday or Saturday night, are welcome to drop in at the big dance tent.

This year, however, you'll find the big tent on "Hamlin Quad" between Grasselli Tower and the Dolan Center for Science & Technology. The site is slated for future landscaping, but currently accommodates a temporary parking area. As a result the tent will cost a good deal less than it did at its traditional Quad location, where the grass had to be protected with special flooring, even as it provides a dramatic new staging area for Reunion activities. To learn more -- including "Who's Coming" -- visit Reunion HQ.

There you'll find the day and time for "History and Fiction in the 'DaVinci Code,'" a lecture by Religious Studies Chair Joseph Kelly that is packing them in at venues across the area -- reason alone to come to Reunion! Plus you can register at our secure online site.

4. More profs online (via audio streaming)
=================================================

There are other Carroll faculty members well worth hearing, and you can catch some online, including Religious Studies Professor Sheila McGinn, who separates fact from fiction in her analysis of how the Passion is portrayed in art; Academic Vice President and English Professor David La Guardia and Philosophy Chair Brenda Wirkus, who responded to a Yale professor in a recent Pilla Program; and several others who summarized their research as part of the third annual "Celebration of Scholarship." Look for the headlines and the audio icons at News & Events.

5. Baseball team vs Case April 27 at Jacobs Field
=================================================

The baseball team, already 5-1 in the Ohio Athletic Conference, will return to Jacobs Field on Tuesday (Apr 27) at noon to face CWRU. For ticket information (adults $5, students $2) contact Kristi Branam by phone (216.397.1663) or email.

For an "instant replay" on how Eric Floriani christened the Home Run Porch last year for the Streaks, visit News & Events.

And for up-to-date results on softball, tennis, golf and track, bookmark Sports Information headlines.There you can also find a wrapup of the Blue Streaks' thrilling trip to the NCAA Div III men's basketball championship, where they finished #3 in the nation, and where the Carroll Pep Band drew ovations from the entire crowd, friend and foe alike.

6. '70 alum is chief counsel to IRS
=================================================

Career milestones are not something you'll normally find in e-News. Given the fast tracks on which many graduates move, we'd have little space left to report anything else. However one appointment that has already received considerable news coverage is the Apr 8 confirmation by the US Senate of Donald Korb '70 as chief counsel of the IRS, a job in which he's sure to draw on the qualities that helped him achieve 46 career victories as a Blue Streaks wrestler. (Don co-captained the squad as a senior with Kerry Volkmann, the current head coach.) For more information read the Cleveland Plain Dealer article.

7. Broad-based support carries JCU past the Kresge Challenge to campaign victory
=================================================

Speaking of taxes, many Carroll alums and other supporters preparing their 2003 returns were no doubt pleased to claim their contributions to the annual fund and the capital campaign, Choosing the Greater Good. With total gifts to the Greater Good campaign having surpassed the $125 million goal -- and our broad-based support for the Dolan Science Center having secured the prestigious Kresge challenge grant of nearly $1 million -- the university is preparing to acknowledge this historic fundraising achievement.

The feat included our successful response to the Kresge Challenge, in which broad-based support for the Dolan Science Center from alums and other supporters helped us secure the prestigious grant of nearly $1 million. Meanwhile, the drive to complete funding for Don Shula Stadium at Wasmer Field continues. If you want to make sure you have that tax item to claim at tax time next year, you can initiate your gift online right now over a secure link.

8. Alums' healthcare battles make news

=================================================

Jeff Matovic '95 had one of the worst cases of Tourette Syndrome doctors at University Hospitals Health System had ever seen when, for the first time in North America, they treated his condition with Deep Brain Stimulation last month. (Prior to the procedure Father Casey Bukala blessed Jeff at Mass in Saint Francis Chapel.) UHHS officials praised him not only for his courage in submitting to the procedure, but for his "eloquence" in helping them focus attention on this debilitating condition and on the remarkable success they achieved in treating it. He has already appeared on Oprah and Good Morning America -- twice -- as well as on numerous other TV news programs. For more information, including links to some dramatic streaming video segments, click on News & Events.

Meanwhile Steve Fitzpatrick '92 and his family continue to ride what must be an emotional roller coaster as his 5-year-old daughter Jillian battles the effects of a rare disorder, Sanfillipo Syndrome III A. Last year (e-News Vol 4 Issue 1) we reported on the last-ditch effort to save her life through an umbilical cord blood transplant -- a procedure made possible largely by the generosity of John Boler '56. It succeeded, but the damage to her immune system has left her vulnerable to five bouts of pneumonia. Only last month she appeared ready to succumb, but to everyone's amazement recovered again, as reported in an Apr 14 Plain Dealer column ("Why we should never give up hope").

To learn more about this valiant little girl, visit Jillian's website.
