=================================================
John
Carroll's campaign, Choosing the Greater Good, will conclude Monday (May 31)
with total gifts and pledges exceeding $135 million, thanks to one of the most
recent gifts -- a $10 million commitment from Frank '53 and Helen Schilling
(pictured at left). John Carroll will establish a scholarship fund in their
names for students of outstanding academic achievement.

2. East LA's 'Homeboy' Jesuit sends forth JCU grads at commencement
=================================================
Father Gregory Boyle SJ delivered the commencement address
to just over 1,000 baccalaureate and master's graduates on Sunday (May 23).
Most of the time he addresses young men and women in quite different circumstances,
as head of Jobs for a Future/Homeboy Industries in East Los Angeles, where he
helps gang members erase their tattoos -- and their mistakes. "I will never
forget this as long as I live," said one parent after hearing his 15-minute
address. You too can hear it along with the words of President Edward Glynn
SJ and Millor orator Michael Glasenapp '04 via audio streaming on the JCU
website.
Other highlights at commencement included presentation of the Alumni Medal to
Al DeGulis '56, Beverly Hawk '75, Don
Kuratko '74 and Bishop A. Edward Pevec G'56; and the
Beaudry Award to Peter Range '04. A prior commitment prevented
Bishop Pevec from attending commencement, but he was on hand Friday (May 21)
at the Alumni awards dinner where other honors were also presented:
The Alumni Volunteer Service Award to Joseph Barmann '76, Timothy
Ryan '49 and Suzanne (deHaas) Tschetter '89; the Silver
Quill for class columnists to Larry Kelley '36; the Campion
Shield award for bravery to Jeff
Matovic '95; and the Alumni/Senior Award to Eric Beck,
Paul Clapp, Gina Dowell, Joseph Lowry, Lindsay Marciniak and Theresa
Spada.

3. Carrie Kondrat '01 to lead immersion trip to Ecuador
=================================================
On June 5 several members of the Carroll community will embark on an immersion
experience in Guayaquil Ecuador. They include Carrie Kondrat '01
of Campus Ministry who will lead the trip and Jerry Pockar,
Editor of John Carroll Magazine, who just finished work on the Spring edition.

=================================================

basis but an international one when the 2004 International Childrens Games come
to Cleveland at the end of July. This university is one of the primary hosts
and venues. For more information, including the roles of Interim Dean of Students

7. Father Schell celebrates 90th birthday, 60th anniversary
in priesthood
=================================================
He is someone with whom virtually everyone reading this may have a personal
memory of if not relationship with and he is celebrating not one but two anniversaries
-- his 90th birthday and 60th anniversary in the priesthood. You can celebrate
with Father Joseph Schell by viewing the multimedia features
on the JCU
website and then submitting your own "Favorite Father Schell story."
=================================================
8. Insights from neuroscience award winners
=================================================
Halsey Heinselman, Angela Lombardi, Kori Ortt and Caroline
Salib provide an insight into their academic experience at Carroll
as they describe how they became involved in the neuroscience concentration
and won first place awards in a major competition. You can hear their "soundbites"
on the JCU
website.
=================================================
9. Remembering Jimmy Breslin'40
=================================================
James Breslin '40 literally assisted at the birth of television,
attending its debut at the 1939 New York World's Fair, working at the American
TV Lab in Chicago after World War II and then joining the first station in Cleveland
2 weeks after WEWS went on the air in January 1948. He also helped develop communications
as a major at John Carroll where he taught directing and scriptwriting. Jimmy
Breslin died on May 8. You can read his obituary in the Plain Dealer online.
=================================================
10. Three Streaks in NCAA track; men capture OAC all-sports title
=================================================
The academic year may be over but the track season continues at the NCAA Div
III Outdoor Track & Field Championships today (May 28) and tomorrow at Millikin
University in Decatur IL for three Blue Streaks -- Gary Adams
(men's 800-meter run), Ellie Fernandez (womens 3,000-meter
steeplechase) and Shannon McConville (womens 5,000-meter run).
McConville, already an All American in cross country, set an Ohio Athletic Conference
championship record in the 5,000 earlier this month with a time of 17:40.96
and was named Marcia French Most Outstanding Women's Track Athlete, succeeding
Danielle (Sluga) Felice '95 and the late Julie Zajac
'02.
In addition, Luke Adkins was named 2004 Kent Tekulve OAC Baseball
Pitcher of the Year, an honor no Carroll hurler had ever received, and the Blue
Streaks men captured the OAC all-sports trophy for the 4th time since joining
the conference in 1989-90. Meanwhile, the football team will add another stamp
to its passport when the Blue Streaks play an all-star team from the Irish American
Football League on Sunday (May 30) on the Greystones rugby pitch in Wicklow,
just south of Dublin. The Streaks previously visited Germany (1994), Spain (1997)
and Italy (2000) for culture and competition under the auspices of the Global
Football Organization. Follow all of the Streaks' triumphs and travels at Sports
Information Headlines.

11. Come to the student EMS team's health fair Jun 2 (6-9 pm)
=================================================
All of the students attending commencement weren't wearing caps and gowns; some
were wearing back packs. They were from the student EMS Association, 75 in all,
who have responded to some 300 emergency calls over the last year. On June 2,
they're holding a health fair in the Dolan Science Center from 6-9 pm, featuring
presentations by Doctors Michael Anderson '86 and John
Pakiela '94 and Registered Dietician & Nutritionist Karin
Palmer who has served JCU Health Services for several years. Karin
took part in a program on anorexia at Carroll in which a young woman from Cleveland
State who survived her experience with the condition credited Palmer with saving
her life. You can hear Karin's remarks archived on the JCU
website.
And for more information on JCU's EMS Assn, read the May 2004 issue of @JCU,
the online newsletter for the JCU community. The May issue also celebrates the
successful conclusion to our Choosing the Greater Good campaign
with bows to Campaign Chairman Pat Auletta '72 and the other
alumni and alumnae who served on the National Steering Committee. Other brief
articles cover:
The expansion of Continuing Education to Columbus (OH) where you will be able
to earn an Executive Certificate in Financial Planning beginning in September
2004
The new partnership between JCU's Muldoon Center for Entrepreneurship and The
Urban League of Cleveland to establish a Small Business Development Center (SBDC).
A national conference of students from Jesuit universities taking place at JCU
(June 4-6) where participants will discuss within the framework of the Church
the issues facing gay and lesbian students.

12. Fiscal year ends Monday (May 31); donor report to follow
=================================================
