1. Launching a new academic year
=================================================
There are several symbolic "starts" to the academic year at John Carroll, not
the least of which is "Celebrate the Spirit," the Mass and picnic lunch that took
place today (Sep 2). Offering the homily was Timothy Shannon SJ, newly arrived
vice president for development and alumni affairs. Look for pictures and a brief
report on the JCU
website.
Another kickoff event last Friday (Aug 27) came in the form of the convocation
address by Edward Glynn SJ, President of JCU. His sobering assessment of how change
is challenging the university can be heard via audio streaming (or read in the
text version) also on the website. Father Glynn began by noting recent achievements,
including JCU's primary role in the Cleveland 2004 International Children's Games
this summer, in which the university hosted 1,700 of the 2,200 youngsters from
more than 50 countries, and served as the venue for 5 of the 10 competitions.
Among the alumni and alumnae who helped make the Games a success were many of
Becky Dinnen's Alumni-in-Admission volunteers.

coverage and be sure to follow the links to earlier coverage, including the
participants' "Good Morning America" greeting (Aug 2) to the nation from Don Shula
Stadium.

2. U.S. News survey ranks JCU among 'Best Colleges' for 16th year
=================================================
Perhaps
the most widely read survey on higher education, U.S.News & World Report's
"Best Colleges" recently appeared in its 2005 edition and for the 16th consecutive
year has ranked John Carroll among the top 10 regional (Midwest) universities
that grant master's degrees. More information is available online.
In athletic programs, the NCAA 2003-04 Directors' Cup rankings placed JCU in the
top 15 percent among 281 Division III institutions, ahead of all other OAC schools
except Wilmington and all other Ohio schools except Denison and Wittenberg. It's
the 5th time in the 9-year history of the program that Carroll has ranked in the
top 40 nationally.
=================================================
3. Coming: '40 years of soccer' (Sep 11), 'Celebrating Champions'
at homecoming (Oct 22-23)
=================================================
Fresh from their "Sweet 16" national ranking last year, the men's soccer team
will meet Wooster under the lights in Don Shula Stadium at Wasmer Field on Sep
11 to climax a celebration entitled, "40 Years of John Carroll Soccer." The day
includes an alumni match and presentation of the Dewey McCarthy Memorial Scholarship.
In football, the championship teams of '89 and '94 will be honored during Homecoming
Weekend (Oct 22-23) along with the newest members of our Hall of Fame: Tom Curtis
'89 (football), Mike Mangan '91 (soccer), Bill Marks '60 (football), Diane Palumbo
Galo '87 (tennis), Cindy Shumaker '94 (basketball) and Larry Wanke '93 (football).
For more information on these and other dates, visit Alumni
Events.

4. Plus, 2 more reasons to return to campus (Reunion planning, Mass & Breakfast)
=================================================
This year's reunion classes (ending in "0" and "5") are invited to return to campus
during Homecoming for their first planning meetings on Saturday (Oct 23). In addition,
the popular Alumni Mass & Breakfast held each year on the Sunday before Thanksgiving
will take place not downtown but at JCU this year (Nov 21). For more information
on either Reunion or the Mass & Breakfast, contact Rosalie
Massey.
=================================================
5. Athletics: Internet broadcasts, team previews, obituary
for beloved coach
=================================================
Sports Information Director Chris Wenzler '90 has previews on soccer, football
and all of the fall sports on the website, along with a report on the Blue Streaks'
Internet broadcasts set to debut this year, as Carroll teams up with entrepreneur
Tom Zawistowski '80. For more details visit the Sports
Information homepage and click on "Headlines."
There you can also read the obituary of Assistant Men's Basketball Coach John
Steadman, who lost a valiant fight against cancer Jul 28.

6. Quotable / Notable ... Olympic Medalist Diana Munz
=================================================
"Sure, being the next Katie Couric would be great." Diana Munz was telling an
interviewer about majoring in communications at John Carroll. “But everyone in
this (major) wants to be Katie Couric.” There may be just as many who want to
be Diana Munz, too, after the JCU junior won a bronze medal at the Olympics in
Athens to go with her silver and gold medals from the 2000 Games. For a picture
of Diana and her newest medal, plus links to articles that contain other refreshing
comments from this self-effacing young woman, visit our website.
