1. 'Busted Halo' founder Mike Hayes keynotes Ignatian Day 2005 at JCU
Mike Hayes was both prayerful and provocative -- but what would you expect from
the man who founded and edits the "Busted Halo" online magazine for Paulist Young
Adult Ministries? The Fordham graduate was the keynote speaker last Friday (Jan
14) for JCU's Ignatian Day, a day when the university community gathers to formally
reflect on what it means to be Catholic and Jesuit. You can hear Hayes' stimulating
presentation on the JCU
website along with his response to each question and comment from the productive
discussion that followed. You'll also find out why he inspired a standing ovation
for Director of Campus Ministry John Scarano.
2. Quotable ... Notable: Edward Glynn SJ
With
the announcement by Father Glynn on Dec 14 that he will step down as JCU President
this year, our alumni and alumnae can only hope his successor will hold them in
the same high esteem that he has. In his 7 years at the university's helm, Father
Glynn has presided over a period of unparalleled enhancement in JCU's facilities,
programs and overall excellence. Yet he has invariably emphasized the same thing
whenever he's had the opportunity to talk about John Carroll: "There is no greater
testament to the excellence of this university than the lives of its graduates."
Helping to ensure a continuity of leadership will be a search committee that includes
Nikki Bondi McPolin '72, Mary Ann Corrigan-Davis '75 and Michael Merriman '78. For a news release on Father Glynn's announcement, as
well as the text of his own statement, click here.
Unfortunately, the expectation that Carroll would be the only Jesuit university
searching for a president already has proven too optimistic with the tragic news
this week (Jan 19) of the sudden death of Harold Ridley SJ, President of Loyola
College in Maryland.
3. See "Directories" online, also important updates
Among the improvements Web Developer Tom Fulton has made in the JCU website has
been to make members of the faculty, staff and administration much more accessible.
Look for "Directories" along the top (horizontal) menu bar. The "Faculty/staff
online directory" you'll find there is searchable by the name of either the
individual or the organization you're looking for.
The website also carries an update this week from Patrick Rombalski, Vice President
for Student Affairs, regarding the violations of the JCU sex offense policy that
occurred late last semester. After two female students filed charges, a hearing
was held and a male student was expelled. For more information on the incidents
and the educational efforts underway, visit see the JCU
website.
4. Hear Olympic champion Diana Munz online -- and join a
special celebration Feb 12
Did
you read the article on Diana Munz in the last issue of John Carroll Magazine?
The Olympic swimming champion (daughter of Robert '63 and Carol Munz), now attends
John Carroll full-time after winning a bronze medal in the 2004 Games in Athens
to go with the gold and silver medals she earned at the 2000 Games in Sydney.
Now you can hear her online
as she was interviewed by Editor Jerry Pockar.
Then join the Carroll community on Feb 12 as we congratulate Diana at halftime
of the men's 3 pm basketball game against Otterbein in the DeCarlo Varsity Center
where the Streaks recorded 32 consecutive victories over 3 seasons.
5. OAC swimming, diving championships return to JCU
Your chance to "cheer the champions on Feb 12 at John Carroll concludes at 6 pm with the final events in the OAC swimming and diving championship meet. This spirited competition returns that weekend to the friendly confines of a renovated Johnson Natatorium, where the men and women Blue Streaks won OAC titles every year but once over a span of 12 years. The Streaks host Hiram this weekend (Jan 21-22).
6. And much more about the winter Blue Streaks
Speaking of excitement, John Carroll's basketball teams continue to make headlines.
Mike Moran's men (hey, that's got a ring to it) beat Mount Union on the Purple
Raiders' court in overtime Wednesday night (Jan 19) to launch another winning
streak after seeing their 14-game bubble burst at the buzzer against Muskingum
last Saturday. Meanwhile Kristie Maravalli's women's team tied Mount twice in
the closing minutes on Wednesday before losing another close game at home. Both
teams are at Marietta tomorrow (Jan 22). For more details see Blue
Streaks sports headlines.
There you'll also learn how the wrestling team is ranked 10th in a national coaches'
poll and how the indoor track season gets underway tomorrow evening at Baldwin-Wallace.
7. Alumni & Alumnae play role in honoring faculty
“There really are an enormous number of talented, wonderfully friendly, dedicated
people here,” declared Miles Coburn when he was named John Carroll's Distinguished
Faculty Award winner two years ago. It is an experience that the biology professor,
who this year chairs the committee for the award, is eager to share with more
and more of his colleagues. To that end he and his committee are seeking nominations
from all segments of the JCU community, including alumni, but he’s concerned that
a perception that the process is tedious or complicated may dissuade some from
initiating it, especially since the 2005 deadline is Feb 1, about 6 weeks earlier
than in previous years. “It really isn’t that involved,” he stressed, offering
to answer questions by phone (216.397.4253) or e-mail.
Letters
of support from alumni also are welcome for nominations for the Lucrezia Culicchia
Award for Teaching Excellence, established by Tony Culicchia '64 to honor outstanding
faculty in the College of Arts & Sciences. Nominations with supporting documentation
are due in the Office of the Dean, College of Arts and Sciences, no later than
Monday, Feb 7. The award will be presented at the Fall 2005 faculty meeting of
the College of Arts and Sciences. Last semester the Culicchia award was given
to Margaret Finucane, Assistant Professor in Communications. See the department's
website
for a brief account that includes a "soundbite" from Dr. Finucane's acceptance
remarks.
8. Now Reunion isn't 'next year,' it's 'this year'
Remember that New Year's resolution? The one about getting together with old (or
not-so-old) friends? Steeped in Logic as they are, JCU alums know better than
most there's no better occasion on which to plan a reunion -- than Reunion, as
in Reunion 2005 (Jun 17-19). Planning already is well underway for the classes
ending in "0" and "5" and you csn take part in person or by conference call. Contact
Rosalie Massey toll-free at 1.800.736.ALUM (Ext 3014) or by e-mail.
9. The charisma of Casimir 'Casey' Bukala SJ
There
are few people who can compete with Santa Claus when it comes to getting the attention
of children and Casey Bukala SJ is one of them. He was in Chicago last month where
Dennis Casey '87 photographed Father's patented "Children's Mass" preceding Breakfast
with Santa. If you want to see about 20 youngsters all perfectly still at the
most frenetic time of the year, visit Alumni
News. Then watch your US mailbox next month for details of how JCU plans to
recognize the contributions of this favorite professor, advisor and chaplain.
