1. Come home early & cheer on the Blue Streaks
Alumni
visiting family in NE Ohio for Christmas may be able to cheer on the Blue Streaks
as the men's basketball team invades Division I to play Cleveland State at the
Wolstein Center in downtown Cleveland at 7:30 pm Wednesday (Dec 22). You can
reserve tickets online
but do so prior to 12 Noon Tuesday (Dec 20). For more information on how the
Streaks are doing in men's AND women's basketball, wrestling, swimming and indoor
track (where Ellie Fernandez, OAC cross country queen, set a 5,000-meter school
record), visit varsity
athletics.
In more bittersweet news, men's soccer coach Ali Kazemaini, who guided the Streaks
to unprecedented success in his 14 seasons at Carroll, announced he is leaving
to pursue other career opportunities. As they say, "Play on!."
2. Answering questions re: year-end gifts
Problem: You haven't made your annual donation to
the Carroll Fund yet and you really want to do it before the end of the year
for tax purposes -- but aren't the university offices closed for the holidays?
Solution: Bob Kirschner, Director of Annual Giving, will be
standing by along with his colleagues through December 30 ready to answer any
questions you may have -- such as those regarding gifts of stock or other securities.
Call, toll-free, 1-800-736-2386, or e-mail
Bob -- but, remember, transfer of securities can take a few days, so start
the process NLT December 26. Also available: online
giving.
3. 'You have mail' -- John Carroll Magazine
Just in time for the Christmas holiday, this edition highlights the words of
President Robert L Niehoff SJ; often harrowing accounts of Hurricane Katrina
and its aftermath from, among others, student-guest Willard Hill (on cover),
Bill Ryan '67 and Miriam McGinn Moorer (daughter of Religious Studies Prof Sheila
McGinn); a report on the international conference, Commitment
to Social Justice in Jesuit Higher Education, hosted by JCU -- plus
news on more more members of the JCU community, class notes and an
Annual Report for 2004-05!
4. The 1LT Charles S. Hymers III & Mary Madelyn B. Hymers Scholarship
This issue of the John Carroll Magazine also reports on a new scholarship
established in memory of Charles S. (Charlie) Hymers '65, who was killed in
Vietnam when the helicopter he was piloting was shot down by enemy fire. It
is the first privately funded scholarship exclusively for the men and women
in JCU's Military Science Program.
5. DC Alumni: 'Save the (new) Date' for Presidential Reception
The reception for alumni in the Washington DC area originally planned on February
7 has been moved to February 6. It is one of more than 20 taking place around
the country, giving alumni and friends the opportunity to meet John Carroll's
new president, Rev. Robert L. Niehoff SJ. He has already appeared at 9 receptions
and 12 more are on the 2006
schedule, beginning with Naples FL on January 11.
6. 'You have pictures' -- Breakfast with Santa ...
...
plus Mass with Father Casey Bukala SJ. Alumni in Chicago
and Cleveland
joined in giving their children a thrill -- and some other deserving youngsters
a happier Christmas, too.
7. Quotable / notable: The value of JCU's 'moral compass'
"If
someone wants you to do something that goes against these principles I've taught
you, you don't tell them, 'No,' you tell them, 'Hell no!'" The speaker was Martha
Walther '76, as she accepted the Alumni Medal in 2003. She was quoting retired
Accountancy Professor Robert Sullins and his emphasis on ethics. Her statement
(better heard in this soundbite
than read on the page), came to mind as one listened to the painful witness
of Walt Pavlo, former MCI middle manager who served 2 years in a federal prison
after pleading guilty to wire fraud and money laundering. He now travels the
country warning college students of how easy it is to repeat the mistakes he
made.
"The chances of your not being tempted are zero," Pavlo told the JCU students
who'd crowded into Donahue auditorium, confiding that he yielded to temptation
because he lacked "a moral compass." Former Boler School Dean Frank Navratil,
explaining why he had invited "a convicted felon" to campus, quoted the late
Michael Lavelle SJ: "It is rarely a question of 'good or bad' but 'good or better'
and 'bad or worse.'" Hear the presentation on the JCU
website.
8. Who are the next Alumni Medalists?
Speaking of the Alumni Medal, the Alumni Office is seeking nominations for this
year’s recipients of the university’s highest alumni honor. The Alumni Medal
is given on the basis of distinguished service to a profession, exemplary family
and personal life, contributions to the community, and leadership service to
the University and the Alumni Association. You can nominate candidates online,
but nominations must be received by March 21. Please contact Ryan Daly, Director
of Alumni Relations, with any questions by phone (216-397-4516) or e-mail.
9. Reunion 2006 -- by telephone!
The
Class of 2001 recently held a reunion planning meeting in Cleveland, Canton
and Pittsburgh -- all on the same evening! How? By 3-way conference call. Contact
Reunion Coordinator Rosalie Massey by phone (216-397-3014) or e-mail
and ask her to include you in the next planning session for classes ending in
"1" or "6." Remember, Reunion 2006 has been moved to June 23-25, the weekend
following Father’s Day and promises to be an even greater time for all – especially
children enjoying our renowned Kids’ Camp! More information online.
