1. See / hear Gerry Adams' presentation at JCU
![]()
Alumni
were part of an audience at John Carroll last Friday (Mar 18) that heard about
the peace process in Northern Ireland from one of the principals in that unfolding
drama, Gerry Adams, President of the Irish Nationalist Political Party Sinn
Féin. The event is available in both audio and video streaming formats on the
JCU website.
2. JCU announces speaker for May 22 Commencement
Jim
Wallis, founder of "Sojourners—Christians for Justice and Peace" and a nationally
known author and columnist, will present the commencement address and receive
an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters at John Carroll on May 22. Wallis is an
evangelical Christian whose recently published book, God’s Politics—A
New Vision for Faith and Politics in America or Why the Right Gets It Wrong
and the Left Doesn’t Get It, has been on the New York Times best sellers
list the last month. For more information, see the March edition of @JCU,
the online journal for the JCU campus community.
3. Student phonathon boosts JCU Annual Fund
Areej
(left) and Sahar Shouman were among the students who volunteered to take part
recently in a phonathon that in just two evenings earned more than $16,000 in
alumni support for the annual fund. As the fiscal year approaches the May 31
closing date, every gift -- and every giver -- becomes more important, according
to Annual Fund Director Bob Kirschner. "One of the questions we're asked when
we approach corporations and foundations for funding is, 'How broad-based is
your support?'" Kirschner said. "The percentage of alumni who give -- regardless
of level -- accounts for the biggest part of our answer."
4. Students invite alums to 'cultivate community'
Some 250 JCU students welcome alumni and alumnae to join them and residents
of Cleveland's Hough neighborhood on Saturday (Apr 23) to create gardens to
help "cultivate community" according to Christine Lewton '05, one of the student
organizers in the events planning class of Peggy Finucane '80, Assistant Professor
of Communications. For more information contact Dr. Finucane by phone (216-397-1780)
or email.
5. John Carroll Magazine focuses on educators
The "Winter 2005" edition of John Carroll Magazine is turning up on coffee tables
in JCU homes, with a particular focus on the education of educators, a process
at which the university excels. For soundbites from some of the interviews that
Editor Jerry Pockar conducted in his research for the issue, visit the JCU website.
6. 'Sweet 16' Streaks take one more bow
The alumni, students and other Blue Streaks supporters who followed the men's
basketball team to the NCAA Div III "Sweet 16" round at Albion (MI) may only
now be settling down from that unbelievable roller coaster finish. The Streaks
took one more bow this week and you can hear the grateful comments of Mike Moran
and his players on the JCU website.
7. Quotable
"One of the most beloved and respected professors ever to have taught at John
Carroll." The speaker was English Professor George Bilgere and he was honoring
his late colleague and friend, Richard Clancey, on the first anniversary of his
death. To hear Bilgere's brief remembrance as well as a recitation by Dr. Clancey
that Bilgere recorded, visit the JCU website.
8. Notable
Among the several alumni we've lost recently was a man considered by many the
greatest football player ever to wear the Blue & Gold. Carl Taseff '51 died
following a long illness on Feb 27. In August 2002, despite the debilitating
effects of Parkinson's Disease, "King Carl" was able to laugh and greet former
teammates during his last visit to the JCU campus, archived on the JCU website.
