1. Robert Niehoff SJ to be JCU's 24th President
Robert L. Niehoff SJ will become the 24th President of John Carroll University
following his appointment at a meeting of the Board of Directors yesterday (April
7). Father Niehoff, Vice President for Planning and Budget since 2002 and Associate
Provost since 2000 at the University of San Francisco, is expected to take office
at JCU in early fall. The 51-year old Jesuit will succeed Edward Glynn SJ, President
since 1998, who last December announced his intention to step down this year.
For more information, see the JCU
website.
2. Mourners for Pope in Rome include JCU student
As
the attention of the world focused on Rome and the funeral of Pope John Paul
II, we received an eyewitness report from JCU Junior Colleen Kookoothe, thanks
to her uncle, Cormac DeLaney '71. He recorded an interview Colleen gave NewsRadio
WSPD 1370 that you can hear on the JCU
website.
The website also has audio streaming of a recollection of the pontiff presented
by Doris Donnelly, Director of the Cardinal Suenens Center, as the JCU community
gathered together for a Memorial Mass yesterday (Apr 7):How
this Pope "changed the game."
3. Remembering Tom Brazaitis '62, Washington DC journalist
Tom
Brazaitis '62, who lost a long and valiant battle with cancer on Mar 30, was
a nationally known author, political columnist and former Washington DC bureau
chief for the Cleveland Plain Dealer. Among the many people who remembered Brazaitis
was Paul Kantz '63, retired vice president for development at JCU and a colleague
of Tom's on the Carroll News. My remembrance of Tom is of him sitting at an
old Remington typewriter in the Carroll News Office in Grasselli Tower pounding
away on 'Mr. B Picks,' a column he wrote in a breezy style forecasting winners
of PAC sports contests. He would occasionally be talking out loud as copy ideas
came to him and there would be a sparkle in his eye as he deftly turned a phrase.
Tom was a wordsmith who really appreciated cleverly descriptive and analytical
writing. As a professional journalist, he became an expert at it."
Widespread coverage of Tom's death included obituaries in the Plain
Dealer -- the Washington
Post -- and a poignant eulogy on the Newsweek
website by his wife, Contributing Editor Eleanor Clift.
4. 'Saint Joseph's Table' fete honors Vince Campanella '63
Saint
Joseph's Table signifies a traditional celebration of a feast day that often
includes the honoring of an individual or family exemplifying the core qualities
of Italian American heritage. On Friday (Mar 18) Vincent Campanella '63 was
the honoree at a presentation of the feast by the Bishop Anthony Pilla Program
in Italian American Studies, whose inspiration, Anthony Pilla '61, was on hand
to give his blessing. The celebration was co-sponsored by the Institute of Catholic
Studies.
