1. 'I look forward to joining you' -- Robert L. Niehoff SJ

Robert Niehoff SJ (from USF website)"I look forward to joining you in late August as the Fall semester begins," wrote Robert L. Niehoff SJ, President-elect of John Carroll, in a message to the JCU community. "As I begin the transition in preparation for my move to John Carroll, I wanted to thank Father Ed Glynn SJ for his many years of service to the University and for his gracious assistance to me during my transition ... Father Glynn will soon appoint a committee to begin the planning for a Fall Inauguration. The Inauguration celebration is an opportunity for the John Carroll Community and the Detroit Province of the Society of Jesus to come together to mark this new moment in John Carroll's long history ...."

Father Niehoff's sense of humor is revealed in an Apr 28 keynote to the women's sports banquet at the University of San Francisco, where he is Associate Provost and Vice President for Planning and Budget. "I often tell people that I do not share one Jesuit trait -- the ability, or at least willingness, to talk at length regarding subjects of which they have no knowledge," he said in prefacing his remarks. "And then, preparing for tonight, my boss, Doctor Jim Wiser, ever encouraging, reminded me that there is no such thing as a bad, short talk." You can read the rest of his engaging remarks on the USF website.

2. Looking forward to Reunion? How about Homecoming?

Click here to see who's coming to Reunion Reservations for Reunion 2005 (Jun 17-19) are rolling in. You can check the list by clicking on the Reunion tent (at right). Then add your own name simply by completing the online form.

If you absolutely, positively, regrettably can't make Reunion this year (for example, you'll be en route to the Equator to celebrate Summer Solstice), mark your calendar now for another excellent opportunity to return to campus next fall for Homecoming (Oct 1). Headlining the weekend's events is Blue Streaks football (2 pm Oct 1, Don Shula Stadium at Wasmer Field, vs Ohio Northern). Contact Erin Hudson or Ryan Daly for more information.

3. Spring sports highlights -- & new way to watch JCU baseball

It was on such a day that TJ Wichmann '01, Ana (Garabis) Wichmann '01 and daughter Mary Kate came to root for the Streaks, including Ana's brother, second baseman Rafael Garabis. Shannon McConville (r) and Ellie Fernandez, in cross country last fallIn the Ohio Athletic Conference Track & Field Championships over the weekend (May 6-7) the Blue Streaks' Shannon McConville won 3 events and received the Marcia French Most Outstanding Track Athlete award for the second straight year. Teammate Ellie Fernandez, an All-American in the 3,000-meter steeplechase last season, swamped the field to win her first OAC title in that event. The women's fastpitch softball team chalked up its third consecutive winning season as Kristin Platz pitched a one-hit shutout in her final game to set the JCU record for career victories (34). Senior tennis star Michelle Petrillo capped her JCU career with her 50th singles victory -- winning the OAC championship in the process -- and was named Women's Player of the Year by conference coaches. On the men's team, sophomore Eliot Brown earned a first team all-OAC selection. Finally, in men's golf, Mike Coyne earned All-OAC honors for the second time in his career by placing sixth at the OAC Championships (Apr 28-29). For all of the details, see the Athletics headlines.

4. Rowing Club christens the 'Schell' shell

Members of the JCU rowing club help christen "The Joseph O. Schell." Click to enlarge image. The John Carroll rowing club's newest shell has been outfitted with one of the best known names in university history -- Joseph O. Schell. Recently William Bichl SJ, Assistant Dean in Arts & Sciences, christened the club's newest craft in honor of the university's beloved former president. Members then wielded the ceremonial champagne bottle over the "Schell" shell. May Father Schell's namesake be as "seaworthy" as he! Click on the image to enlarge it.

5. At JCU spring break often means a break - for others

In what has become a growing annual tradition several groups of students, along with members of the faculty/staff/administration spent spring break on service trips to locations ranging from Appalachia to Ecuador. Read more highlights in last month's edition of @JCU, the online newsletter for the campus community.

6. Recognizing outstanding members of the faculty

Mariana Ortega, PhDAndrew Welki, PhDAndrew Welki, Assistant Professor in the Department of Economics and Finance, has won the Distinguished Faculty Award, and Mariana Ortega, Associate Professor of Philosophy, the Lucrezia Culicchia Award for Teaching Excellence. At a faculty reception next fall Dr. Ortega will receive the award, established by the late Anthony Culicchia '64 to honor Arts & Sciences faculty members. Dr. Welki, who will receive his honor at May 22 Commencement ceremonies, accepted the congratulations of the JCU community at a reception in Schott Atrium. Hear his heartfelt appreciation and other brief remarks via audio streaming on the JCU website.

7. Award-winning Carroll News names Person of the Year

Dan Clark, Director of Campus Safety ServicesGiven the role that a campus security chief has in enforcing a university's regulations, this is the last person one might expect to win any kind of award from students. But Dan Clark's accessibility to and concern for students led The Carroll News editors to name JCU's Director of Campus Safety Services their Person of the Year.

Members of the CN staff also created a fair amount of news in their own right by earning 10 national and regional awards and meriting more recognition than any in the paper’s 80-year history. For more details read the JCU news release.

8. 'This educational opportunity is brought to you -- by You!'

Speaking of recognition, we'd like to recognize you as a supporter of the Annual Fund, a vital source of funding that helps offset the cost of a JCU education and make it available to more young men and women. The university's fiscal year ends on May 31 so, if you haven't done so already, please consider a gift, which you can initiate online.
