1. Reunion 2005 is -- here!
Reunion
2005 begins tomorrow (Jun 17) and runs through brunch Sunday morning (Jun 19).
If you've made plans to be there, you're probably already in the car or at the
airport. If not -- and you suddenly find yourself in the vicinity of the JCU
campus -- you're still welcome to drop in for dancing under the Big Tent on
the Quad, Friday or Saturday evening any time after 9 pm. And don't forget to
visit the JCU website for coverage
of this nationally renowned event.
2. And soon, John Carroll Magazine, too
The
latest edition of John Carroll Magazine goes in the mail tomorrow (Jun 17).
The publication's "Periodical" mailing designation means that it should reach
you much more quickly than before. In it you'll find a farewell message from
Edward Glynn SJ, who is stepping down as JCU President, along with a look back
at "The Glynn Years."
The issue also includes the 4th annual "Making a Difference" section focusing
on notable alumni and students: Barbara Schubert '62, CPT Jon Powers '00, Jim
Myers '80, Norma Geller '87, Monique Ogletree '96G, Taleiza Calloway '05, Sarah
Wagner '05, Jodie Bowers '06, A.J. Cianflocco '72 MD and other alums at the
Cleveland Clinic, Bill Gagliano '77, Jeanne Mullin '96, Kathy Henkels '04, Paul
Kantz '63, Robin Baum '87, Jim Adair '66, Jason Therrien '01, Paul Federico
'88, Linda Conley Chambers '81 and Jim Walpole '66.
To hear soundbites from 3 of Editor Jerry Pockar's interviews (with Barbara
Schubert, outgoing Boler Dean Frank Navratil and Counseling Director John Ropar
'72), to read unabridged versions of Class Notes and to access PDF files for
this and all recent editions, click on the thumbnail image of the magazine cover
(above, left).
3. Final bow for track stars & other JCU athletes
Shannon McConville and Ellie Fernandez repeated as All-American athletes
with their 5th place finishes in the 5,000 meter run and 3,000 meter steeplechase,
respectively, at the NCAA Division III Track & Field Championships in Waverly
(IA). Read about the track stars and other outstanding JCU athletes, including
Rafael Garabis '05, named to ESPN THE MAGAZINE's Academic All-American College
Division Baseball Team, at Varsity
Athletics on the JCU website. There (and in John Carroll Magazine) you can
also read about the 8 new members selected to the JCU Sports Hall of Fame. They'll
be honored this year on Homecoming Weekend (Sep 30-Oct 1).
4. Alumni events on tap in New York City (Jul 7) & Rochester
(Aug 17)

If
you're going to be in NYC around Independence Day -- specifically the Bronx
on Jul 7 -- perhaps you can join other JCU alumni at Yankee Stadium for the
New York-Cleveland game. Likewise, Blue Streaks residing in or visiting Rochester
(NY) in mid-August may want to save Aug 17, the date when alumni will gather
at the Buffalo Bills training camp on the campus of St. John Fisher College.
Word has it that Middle Linebacker London Fletcher '98 may be able to take a
break from practice to sign a few autographs. Watch for more info on both events
or contact Erin Hudson of Alumni Relations by phone (216-397-4315) or e-mail.
5. 'You have pictures' ... Alumni Golf Outing
A
big part of the summertime plans for many alumnae & alumni no doubt are
golf outings. One such event recently (Jun 6) drew some 125 alums and guests
to the deceptively named Sleep Hollow course in Brecksville (OH). For some visual
highlights, including a worm's eye view of one foursome, click on the image
at left.
6. Quotable: 'Where have you touched suffering yourself?'
Few
people can articulate the Jesuit mission to be "men & and women for others"
as eloquently as Howard Gray SJ, JCU's Assistant to the President for University
Mission. In recent remarks (May 19) to healthcare & social service professionals
meeting in Donahue Auditorium, Father Gray spoke of "Solidarity in Suffering"
and recalled his experiences with refugees along the Thai-Cambodian border.
