1. Get ready for Homecoming 2005 PLUS Mass and Breakfast this week
John
Carroll's Homecoming celebration gets underway on Wednesday (Sep 28) with men's
soccer and with volleyball. Thursday (Sep 29) features women's soccer and a
Kulas appearance by comedian Jim Breuer. Highlighting Friday (Sep 30) is the
Hall of Fame dinner at Windows on the River and afterward a Drive-In movie --
that's right, a Drive-In movie -- on Hamlin Quad between Grasselli Tower and
the Dolan Center.
Saturday (Oct 1) begins with Mass at 9:30 am in Saint Francis Chapel. A parade
around campus and street fair on Belvoir follow and then the university dedicates
the concourse in Don Shula Stadium in honor of Casimir (Casey) Bukala SJ,
Philosophy Professor and longtime team chaplain. All of these events occur prior to the Blue Streaks'
2 pm football game with Ohio Northern, in which fans can expect to see a fired-up Carroll
team. The Streaks, 48-17 winners over Marietta Saturday (Sep 24), are on a mission
to prove they are NOT the squad shut out by Mount Union 2 weeks ago.
The weekend concludes on Sunday (Oct 2) with the traditional fall Mass for alumni
in Saint Francis Chapel followed by breakfast in Schott Dining Hall. Check out
the complete Homecoming
schedule online and also register for the Mass
and Breakfast. But do it today!
2. Hear Robert Niehoff SJ in John Carroll Magazine online
The
latest edition of John Carroll Magazine is on its way to your doorstep (if it's
not there already), with articles on our new President, Reverend Robert Niehoff
SJ; an interview with Athletic Director Laurie Massa; a profile on Professors
Helen Murphy and Cyrilla Wideman, founders of the Neuroscience Concentration;
the first of a series on JCU parents; a book excerpt by Bishoy Mikhail '97;
features on some of the many alumni over the years who have found their way
to the Heights from the Windy City; and other news and notes. One can learn
a lot about Father Niehoff from the insights he shared with Editor Jerry Pockar
in an interview for the magazine. Soundbites from that interview can be heard
via audio streaming on the magazine
website.
3. Watch for webcast of JCU Inauguration October 11
The inauguration of Father Niehoff as President of John Carroll on
Tuesday (Oct 11) in the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center has as its theme "Engaging
the World." We plan to webcast the 2:30 pm ceremony, so anyone who can
connect to the WorldWide Web can watch the live event. Look for the link on
the JCU website.
4. Reunion 2006 -- by
telephone!
To
be honest, one can't really enjoy Reunion by phone, but you can participate
via long distance in the planning sessions (for classes ending in 1 or 6). The
meetings are getting underway, so contact Reunion (and Conference Call) Coordinator
Rosalie Massey by phone (1-800-736-2586) or e-mail.
Don't forget: Reunion next year takes place on the weekend AFTER Father's Day,
so reserve June 23-25 on your 2006 calendar.
5. JCU hosts international conference on social justice
Not
long after the last inauguration guests have left campus, delegations will be
arriving from nearly 30 Jesuit institutions of higher learning nationwide (plus
one from Korea) for "Commitment to Justice in Jesuit Higher Education." The
4-day conference (Oct 13-16) includes keynote addresses by Dean Brackley SJ,
author and educator at Universidad Centroamericana (UCA) in El Salvador, Central
America; and Paul Locatelli SJ, President and Professor of Accounting at Santa
Clara University; as well as 41 panels that include presenters from the JCU
faculty and administration. More information is available on the Center
for Community Service website.
6. Responding to Katrina
Along
with the prayers and donations the members of our community have offered victims
of Hurricane Katrina, John Carroll has joined with other Jesuit universities
in accepting students from Loyola of New Orleans, Tulane and other universities
within the affected area. You can read this report and other stories in the
latest edition of @JCU,
the online newsletter for the campus community.
7. Quotable: Pastor Anthony Parker '94 and Charles Geschke
Anthony
Parker '94 (l), an attorney and a minister in the Pentecostal Church of God
in Christ, outlined what is required to truly embrace diversity in his Tuohy
lecture last summer. The lecture, featuring a soundbite, can be heard via audio
streaming on the JCU
website.
Chuck Geschke (r), who taught mathematics at JCU in the 1960s before co-founding
Adobe Systems, returned to his hometown to speak to the Entrepreneurs Association
at the organization's annual kickoff dinner (Sep 13). The slides and audio of
his address also are available in flash presentations on the JCU website.
