1. Joining 'Ignatian Family Teach-In' at Fort Benning
A
JCU contingent of 25 students and faculty/staff members travels to Fort Benning
(GA) this weekend (Nov 19-21) to join an Ignatian Family Teach-In and a national
vigil and protest against the U.S. Army's School of the Americas (SOA). The
event commemorates the assassination of 6 Jesuit priests and two companions
by Salvadoran soldiers at the University of Central America (UCA) 16 years ago.
JCU President Robert Niehoff SJ invited the campus community to a prayer service
today (Nov 18) on behalf of the university's representatives "as they embark
on this important mission of advocacy for social justice and solidarity with
the poor of Central America."
To hear arguments for and against the School of the Americas (operating since
2001 as WHISC -- Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation) visit
the JCU website.
2. JCU hosts international Jesuit conference on faith & justice
Social
justice was the core subject for the 4-day conference (Oct 13-16) that brought
to our campus 300 representatives of Jesuit higher education in the US, Korea
and El Salvador. Giving keynote addresses were Dean Brackley SJ, former Tuohy
Chair holder at JCU who has taught at Universidad Centroamericana (UCA) in El
Salvador since 1990 when he succeeded one of the Jesuit martyrs; and Paul Locatelli
SJ, President of Santa Clara University since 1988. To hear soundbites, and
more, click on report.
3. Inauguration highlights -- via audio, video streaming
Welcoming
the delegates to the Commitment to Justice conference was one of the first official
duties of Robert Niehoff SJ following his inauguration on October 11. In his
opening remarks Father Niehoff spoke of "the need to embed
our commitment to justice in everything we do," adding,"I hope this conference
will spill over and that our walls will listen because we need that, too." For
both audio and video streaming of highlights from the Mass and the Installation
Ceremony, visit the JCU website.
4. Alumni can meet new President in receptions N-S-E&W
In addition to the alumni who were able to attend his inauguration, Father Niehoff
is meeting many more at a series of receptions in cities across the country
-- including Chicago, Pittsburgh, Columbus, Youngstown, Naples & West Palm Beach
(FL), Boston, New York City, Washington DC, Buffalo, San Diego, LA and San Francisco,
in addition to Cleveland. He's already visited a half-dozen locations and will
travel to another dozen during the spring semester. For information, check the
Alumni website
or contact Ryan Daly, Director of Alumni
Relations.
5. Read @JCU for info on Town Hall meetings, other stories
Barely
a month after his inauguration, Father Niehoff demonstrated one of the ways
in which he intends to communicate with the campus community by holding the
first of 4 "Town Hall" meetings with members of the faculty, staff and administration.
For a summary of the Nov 10 session that dealt with the financial challenges
facing the university read @JCU, the e-newsletter for the campus community.
Among other stories the issue posted yesterday (Nov 17) also reports on a "rally
against intolerance" organized by students following incidents on campus this
fall involving racial and homophobic slurs. Click on the @JCU logo above and
then click on "November 2005."
6. New endowment honors memory of Dorothy Kazel G'74
Dorothy Kazel OSU, who received a master’s degree from John Carroll
in 1974, was one of 4 churchwomen murdered in El Salvador. To commemorate the
25th anniversary of her death the university is establishing the Dorothy Kazel
Endowment for Latin American Studies. For more information, contact Development
Officer Perry Clark.
7. Join your Class Reunion committee -- one way or the other
Early one recent evening, Daniel Squires showered and dressed after working
out in the Ralph Vince Cardio Room in JCU's recreation complex, then headed
over to the Alumni Lounge on the 3rd floor of Rodman Hall. Meanwhile at his
home in Toledo Jonathan Boyle was kicking back in a comfortable chair, his phone
within arm's reach. Both were doing the same thing, attending a reunion planning
meeting for their Class of '96 -- along with Geo Brown and Kris Kieltsch Packard
(in person) and Jennifer Burke and Amy Spisich Kogovek (by conference call.)
If your class year ends in a "1" or a "6" you too can join in preparations for
your reunion, no matter where you live. Remember, Reunion 2006 will take place
the weekend AFTER Father's Day -- June 23-25 -- so it won't interfere with the
annual offering of socks and ties. Contact Rosalie
Massey today.
8. Don't miss Breakfast with Santa in Cleveland, Chicago
Fortunately, Santa locked in low-price fuel contracts for his team of reindeer,
so his deliveries will take place as scheduled this year -- as will Breakfast
with Santa -- in Cleveland on December 4 (9:30 am, Lombardo Student Center)
and in Chicago on December 11 (10:30 am, 15th floor of Kasbeer Hall at Loyola
University). For more information check the flyer (with the crayons on the front)
that just came in the mail or contact Erin
Hudson in the Alumni Relations office.
9. How about France in March or Alaska in May?
Now here's a real "spring break" -- a trip to France (Mar 3-11) and another
to Alaska (May 22-31) with members of the John Carroll faculty. For more information,
click visit the links on the Alumni website.
10. Quotable: 'The moment I live for'
The words are those of Mariana Ortega PhD, Associate Professor of Philosophy,
as she accepted the Lucrezia Culicchia Award for Teaching Excellence, established
by the late Tony Culicchia '64 to honor outstanding faculty members in the College
of Arts & Sciences. You can hear a 15-second soundbite on the JCU
website.
