1. Engaging a new Boler School Dean
"Engaging
the World," the theme chosen by President Robert L. Niehoff SJ for the 1st year
of his JCU presidency, could apply to the university's selection of Luís María
R. Calingo as Dean of the Boler School of Business. Currently dean of the College
of Business Administration and Professor of International Business at California
State University, Dr. Calingo has held senior positions in higher education
in Asia as well as the US. His administrative competencies include strategic
planning, assessment, external relations, fund-raising, development of interdisciplinary
academic programs, and creation of institutional linkages. Among his professional
interests are servant leadership, strategic planning, total quality management,
and international business with a focus on Southeast Asia. For more information
see JCU news release.
2. JCU, museum present symposium on Global Climate Change; hosts
ANWR photo exhibit
Global
warming, one of the "hot" science subjects of the day, is the focus of a major
symposium -- Educating Ourselves about Global Climate Change -- to be presented
by John Carroll and the Cleveland Museum of Natural History (Mar 17-20). In
connection with the symposium, JCU's Dolan Science Center will host "Seasons
of Life and Land," a photographic exhibit featuring the Arctic National Wildlife
Refuge (Feb 17-Apr 30). You can preview a sampling of the stunning images by
visiting the JCU website
-- and clicking on the name of nationally acclaimed photographer Subhankar Banerjee.
3. Our students lead Jesuit
institutions at March for Life in DC
John Carroll registered
the largest contingent of students (75) among Jesuit institutions for the annual
March for Life in Washington DC Jan 23, the event marking the 33rd anniversary
of Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court ruling that legalized abortion in America.
For larger image and more info, see JCU
website.
4. Commemorating MLK, remembering Coretta Scott King
John Carroll celebrated the Martin Luther King Jr holiday on Jan 24 with the
help of a man who stood shoulder-to-shoulder with the civil rights martyr. A
little over 50 years ago Joseph Echols Lowery joined with King to co-found the
Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) an organization that became
a force in the civil rights movement. The dapper 81-year old Rev. Lowery, who
had special praise for the JCU Gospel Choir, gave a spirited presentation that
can be heard online
via audio streaming.
5. Reflecting on John Carroll's Ignatian tradition
Just
prior to the start of this semester, Paul V. Murphy, Director of Catholic Studies,
led the JCU community in reflection on our Ignatian tradition and also shared
some thoughts on the program he took charge of last summer. We share his soundbites
online
via audio streaming.
6. Members of faculty, administration make news
Many
alumni already know Paul Murphy -- that is, Paul R. Murphy Jr -- Professor in
the Boler School of Business and one of the most prolific writers published
in the leading journals of the logistics field. Read more about this distinction
in the newly-posted edition of @JCU, the online newsletter for the campus community:
http://www.jcu.edu/pubaff/@jcu/january2006.pdf
Along with the information on both Paul Murphy(s), the January edition of @JCU
notes achievements by other members of the JCU faculty and administration, including
--
Steven Hayward, Assistant Professor of English, winner of the international
2006 Grinzane Cavour Prize for Emerging Novelists
Sharon M. Kaye, Associate Professor of Philosophy, and Peggy Finucane, Assistant
Professor of Communications, recipients of the Miles Award for Community Service
Dr Kaye; Jen Merritt, Visiting Assistant Professor of Education; and Paul Thomson,
Assistant Professor of Philosophy, coordinators of the acclaimed Carroll-Cleveland
Philosophers Program
Susan Long, Professor of Anthropology, author of the recently published Final
Days: Japanese Culture and Choice at the End of Life
Linda Eisenmann, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, author of the groundbreaking
Higher Education for Women in Postwar America, 1945-65
7. Alumnus lectures on 'blogs'
John
Ettorre '80, free-lance writer and former editor of the Alumni Journal (forerunner
to John Carroll magazine), gave a guest lecture (Jan 25) on "blogging" to Assistant
Professor Richard Hendrickson's Communications class on Politics, Public Policy
and the Press. Ettorre reminded the students that anything they post on a web
log is liable to show up later when someone "Googles" their name -- a prospective
employer, for example! Hear soundbites from Ettorre's presentation and find
a link to his blog, Working with Words, on the JCU website.
8. How '43 grad remembers JCU
Bruce
Thompson '43 recently sent 15 of his fellow alumni a copy of the commencement
program from their graduation ceremony, prompting us to retrieve from our files
a few soundbites we recorded of Bruce at a recent reunion. You can listen to
his brief comments -- and find out why that Jan 18 event 63 years ago was so
special -- on the JCU
website.
9. Student Union president achieves 2nd 'first'
Another notable event at JCU occurred on Jan 18 this year when Daniel O'Malley
'07 was inaugurated to the Student Union presidency. To learn about the 2 precedents
O'Malley has set and to hear a 30-sec soundbite, visit the JCU
website.
10. Don Shula hosts presidential reception in Florida
Don Shula '51 hosted a reception in West Palm Beach, Florida, as Rev Robert
L. Niehoff SJ embarked on his itinerary for 2006, meeting alumni and other guests
at locations around the country. Venues also have included Naples, Boston, New
York City and, last Monday (Feb 6) Washington DC. Click on image at left of
Father Niehoff, "Coach" and Mary Anne Shula for larger view and, for
the rest of Father Niehoff's 2006itinerary see the Alumni
website.
11. Notable / Quotable
"To
go wherever we're called to go" In an example of how individuals throughout
the JCU community reflect Ignatian values, Mary Ann Flannery of the Sisters
of Charity, celebrated alumna of Siena Heights University, tells what attracted
her to her religious order, in brief soundbites on the JCU
website.
12. Speaking of honoring alumni ... and JCU poet George Bilgere
This is the 45th year in which JCU and the National Alumni Association will
bestow its highest award, the Alumni Medal, on individuals who have distinguished
themselves in service to their families, their professions, their communities
-- and their university. Submit your nomination online.
In
recent years citations honoring Alumni Medalists at Commencement have been the
work of Associate Engish Professor & Poet George Bilgere, who won his most
recent award with a book soon to published. Haywire, forthcoming from Utah State
University Press, was selected for the 2006 May Swenson Poetry Award, named
for one of America's most provocative and vital writers who died in 1989.
13. New soccer coach ... & other Blue Streaks headliners
John
Carroll added one of the most prominent names in US soccer to its coaching staff
(Jan 30) when Athletic Director Laurie Massa introduced Hector Marinaro as Head
Coach of the men's soccer program. Marinaro is the all-time leading scorer in
the Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL), which last year named its MVP award after
him. He succeeds Ali Kazemaini who in 14 seasons developed the Blue Streaks
into an emerging OAC & Div III power.
Early in 2006 the Ohio Athletics Conference has recognized several Blue Streaks
among its Athletes of the Week: (Jan 30-Feb 3) Cyril Pinchak (men's track);
(Jan 23-29) Shayla Bell (women's basketball) and Ellie Fernandez (women's track);
(Jan 16-20) Pete Moran (men's basketball), Patrick Hulseman and Jackie Nowak
(men's & women's diving), and Gen Kahn (women's field events). Blue Streaks
from the fall '05 sports were honored for their athletic and academic performance
at halftime of the JCU-Capital men's basketball game Wednesday night (Feb 8)
in the DeCarlo Center. Chris Wenzler '90 supplies information on all JCU sports
at Sports
Headlines.
14. Athletics' Mike Moran achieves milestone, loses parents within
weeks
Life
in recent weeks has been a roller coaster for men's Head Basketball Coach Mike
Moran. On Jan 21 the Blue Streaks, with son Pete as leading scorer and son Matt
as assistant coach, earned Moran his 250th career victory in 14 seasons at JCU.
One week later (Jan 27) his mother, Mary Ann, died suddenly. Only a month earlier
(Dec 15) he lost his father, Edward, to cancer.
15. On this week's lecture circuit
The "lecture circuit" makes several stops at JCU this week, bringing lectures
by Canadian author Timothy Taylor tomorrow (Feb 14), JCU's own Joseph Kelly
on Wednesday (Feb 15) and Archbishop Wilton T. Gregory of Atlanta on Thursday
(Feb 16). Consult the Intellectual Enrichment Series online.
