1. A&E 'reality' series stars JCU's Joe Adair, debuts Easter Sunday (Apr 16)

A 2000 JCU graduate is one of the stars of "God or the Girl," a 5-part TV series that begins Easter Sunday evening on the A&E Network. Joe Adair, coordinator of immersion experiences and a resident campus minister at JCU, joined 3 other men as they shared the process of discerning whether or not they have a vocation for the priesthood.

Joe Adair, on one of the immersion trips he lead to assist Katrina victimsExecutive Producer Mark Wolper revealed that the series, designed as a reality show to capitalize on the celibacy issue, turned into a documentary. "We completely shifted 180 degrees as a result of what we learned from these gentlemen," Wolper was quoted in the Washington Post. He spoke of "how much respect grew in us for their decision, for them as men and for the struggle they were going through."

For more background, click on Joe's picture (at right) and listen to a 3-minute "soundbite." Adair (son of Jim '66), was asked how he got involved in the project, how he felt about the show and its title -- and how the series ends. Then consult local cable schedules for broadcast times. In the Cleveland area, for example, Adelphia has it slotted on Apr 16 & 17 at 9 pm and on Apr 22 at 10 pm. In addition, Joe expects to be on the Apr 10 Today Show.

2. Tim Russert '72 to speak at JCU benefit May 30

Tim Russert '72, NBC News VP & host of Meet the PressTim Russert '72, one of the most sought-after speakers on the national -- if not international -- lecture circuit, will make an appearance in Cleveland on behalf of John Carroll on Tuesday, May 30, at 5:30 pm in the Grand Ballroom of the Renaissance Hotel. More information will be forthcoming for the May 30 event regarding ticket prices and other details. Proceeds from the benefit will support JCU scholarships for Cleveland students. For preliminary info contact Susan Rozewski by phone (1-800-736-2586) or email.

3. TV listings, continued: Alumnus appears on 'Religion & Ethics'

Brian Stiltner '88, Sacred Heart Univ. Prof & Dept. HeadRecently another alumnus, Brian Stiltner '88, drew some TV air time, appearing on the Mar 24 PBS newsweekly program, "Iraq: Just war revisited." Dr. Stiltner is Associate Professor and Chair of the Philosophy and Religious Studies Department at Sacred Heart University.

Read a transcript of the program and view the archived segment on the "Religion & Ethics" website.

4. 'And the Alumni Medal envelope please'

JCU's Alumni MedalNewest recipients of our highest alumni award, the Alumni Medal, are Rev. Joseph H. Callahan '79, Donald J. Coburn MD '43, Salvatore R. Felice '57, Paul Kantz Jr '63 and Molly G. Robinson '75. They will be honored guests at the 2006 Alumni Awards banquet on Friday (May 19) and have their medals presented at commencement exercises on Sunday (May 21).

5. Read about new master's degree offering in @JCU

Click here for a PDF copy of @JCUBeginning in the fall semester JCU will offer a master's degree in non-profit management. As quoted in @JCU, the online newsletter for the campus community, Sociology Professor Duane Dukes explained, "We will be offering evening courses, online courses and even hybrid courses. We’re trying to have weekend and summer courses as well.” The current @JCU also deals with the unprecedented enrollment challenge that faces John Carroll, a new Opportunity Scholarship -- and much more. 6. 100 students 'immerse' themselves in service trips - 'film at 11'

Father Niehoff commissions students, faculty & staff for their immersion experiencesEarlier last month (Mar 2), Cleveland's WKYC Channel 3 News reported on the Spring Break plans of the JCU students who were going south not to sunbathe but to do some heavy lifting for victims of the Katrina hurricane. There are about 100 students involved in immersion experiences this spring and summer. Find links to a summary and the archived TV segment on the JCU website.

7. There's no debating who's best

(L to R) Chris Schroeder '07, Dr. Brent Brossmann & Sean McClureSean McClure ’07 and Chris Schroeder ‘09 are 2 JCU students with whom you don't want to argue. The novice debaters won a national championship by defeating Liberty University for the 3rd time in a row and spoiling Liberty's appearance on the CBS Evening News. Liberty, you see, is heavily endowed by Rev Jerry Falwell and has a debate coach who also tutors one George W. Bush. "The TV crew didn't ignore us altogether," quipped Brent Brossmann, who directs the Blue Streaks debate team. "At one point they asked, 'Hey, could ya give us a little room?'" You can hear samples of our students' eloquence on the JCU website.

8. Fernandez '06, Hulseman '09 make JCU sports history

The Blue Streaks are scoring early individual and team victories in the spring sports of baseball, softball, golf, tennis and track, but we can't close the book on the winter sports without noting the historic performances of Ellie Fernandez '06 and Patrick Hulseman '09.

Ellie Fernandez (left) & Patrick HulsemanFernandez gained All-American status in indoor track (5,000 m run), something she had already done in cross country (twice) and outdoor track (3,000 m steeplechase). Ellie became the first athlete in the 85-year history of JCU sports to qualify as an All-American in 3 different athletic seasons.

Patrick Hulseman '09 , was honorable mention All-American in diving, taking after his father, Paul '82, an All-American swimmer who heads the Alumni Association. They form the second father-son All-American duo in Blue Streaks history. Mark '04 and Mark '77 Hawald achieved the same honors in wrestling. Get daily reports on Blue Streaks athletes from Sports Information Director Chris Wenzler '90.
