1. Quotable I -- Tim Russert '72

Tim Russert addresses more than 900 alumni and friends"I could not do what I do on Meet the Press without having gone to Canisius High School and John Carroll University. (Jesuit education) taught me how to think, how to argue and how to look at things rationally and logically." -- Tim Russert '72, speaking at a JCU scholarship benefit May 30 to more than 900 alumni, their guests, prospective students and others from the community. The renowned TV newsman also spoke about his new book, Wisdom of Our Fathers, and how it grew out of the response to his best selling homage to his own father, Big Russ and Me. You can hear his thoughtful, often humorous, presentation on the JCU website where you can also view a brief (3 min) video that displays the JCU campus in a way you've never seen before.

2. Quotable II -- Molly Robinson '75

3. Quotable III -- Cyril Pinchak '06

Cyril Pinchak '06, Millor Orator"Our Jesuit education seeks to form students so they might have the knowledge to see the world as it is and the imagination to see the world as it might be. Our education has taught us that it is not the answers which define our lives as much as it is the questions that we ask." -- Cyril Pinchak, who spoke at Commencement May 21 for the Class of 2006 as the Millor Orator. He and Beaudry Award winner Doug Phillips had also been honored at the Alumni Awards banquet along with Rosemary and Tom Costello '72 whose performance as Class Columnist(s) for John Carroll Magazine merited the Silver Quill award. Listen to the commencement presentations of Cyril Pinchak, JCU President Robert Niehoff SJ and guest speaker Sister Mary Peter Traviss OP on the JCU website.

4. Fernandez '06, Kahn '06 among Streaks' -- and nation's -- best

Ellie Fernandez & Gen Kahn, All-Americans in steeplechase & long jumpEllie Fernandez and Gen Kahn put an exclamation point on their JCU careers by giving the Blue Streaks 12th place in the NCAA Division III Track & Field Championships May 25-26 -- highest finish in school history. Fernandez placed 2nd in the nation in the 3,000 meter steeplechase and Kahn placed 4th in the long jump.

Any highlight reel for JCU spring sports this year would also feature the men's and women's tennis teams who both won OAC championships. They also set program records for victories, led by Lauren Castagnero who graduated as the women’s all-time leader with 136 victories and Jacob Borth who won all 12 of his OAC singles matches this year. Head Coach Bruce Thomas earned Coach-of-the-Year honors.

In softball Janine Solomon and Jamie Smrdel were all-OAC picks. Solomon closed out her JCU career with school records in hits in a season (68), at-bats (140), runs scored (37) and stolen bases (21). Smrdel finished her rookie season with a school record 56 RBI. In baseball Sean McCarthy led the Streaks in batting average (.398), runs (32), hits (53) and RBI (33). In golf Paul Schroder and first-year phenom Dan Arison helped Carroll earn its 12th fourth-place finish in the last 16 years. More on Fernandez, Kahn and all of the Streaks at Sports Information.

5. Engaging the World -- teaching in Japan

Lauren Stockhausen '05"I love teaching and I love the Japanese language," exclaimed Lauren Stockhausen '05 who is looking forward to the best of both worlds this fall when she becomes an English teacher in Japan. Lauren was one of three "alumni" of East Asian Studies at JCU to earn a spot in JET -- the Japan Exchange & Teaching program. She also credited the Beginning Japanese course taught by Visiting Instructor Keiko Nakano MA with nurturing her interest. Also en route to Japan are Christopher Miller, who received a master's degree at the May 21 commencement, and David Krueger, who earned his undergraduate degree.

"The government officials from Japan who run the JET program are looking for people who have the ability to adjust to other cultures," explained East Asian Studies Coordinator Susan Long. "It's quite competitive." JCU students have qualified for JET assignments before, she said, but never more than one in the same year. For more information on our JET-setters here is @JCU, the online newsletter for the campus community.
