1. Hear highlights from John Carroll magazine -- summer 2006
If the image at left looks familiar, that's because it's the cover of the Summer
2006 issue of John Carroll magazine you may have just received in the mail.
Articles include "A Paris Diary," an account of the
June conference in the City of Lights sponsored by JCU's Cardinal Suenens Center
for Theology & Church Life. Among the presenters was Howard Gray SJ who was,
once again, memorable. You can hear Father Gray online along with Editor Jerry
Pockar's interview with Ric Harris '86, NBC's general manager of online media.
The magazine also features a number of other alumni, including Gerry O'Connell
'61, Nancy Benacci '77, Ellie Fernandez '05, Melanie Shakarian '00, Manuela
Lue '94, Della Schoenecker '04, Robert Hager '84, Evelyn Jenkins Gunn G'73,
John Winchester '67, James Myers '80, Annette Haile '74, Art Noetzel '38 (90
years young), Joe Miller '59 (JCU's Great Communicator) and Howard 'Hoddy'
Hanna III '69.

2. JCU website offers podcasts
"I had four wonderful years here," declared Hoddy Hanna, as he helped the Entrepreneurs
Association kick off its program year on Sept 25. "I sharpened my tools for
three things that would be important to me -- my family, our business and our
community." The business to which he referred is Howard Hanna Real Estate Services,
the 5th largest real estate brokerage firm in the US. Hear "Building a Great
Company," by audio streaming and/or podcast on the JCU
website.
David Knox '71 was part of a Society
of Professional Journalists (SPJ) panel this summer hosted by Assistant Communications
Professor Richard Hendrickson for a group of mayors touring the US from Moldova.
Knox is an investigative reporter and manager of computer assisted reporting
at the Akron Beacon Journal. The panel discussed Ohio's "Coingate" scandal
and the case involving the NY Times' Judith Miller. Audio streaming -- and
a podcast -- also on the JCU
website.
We've
also produced a podcast and audio streaming from the Constitution
Day (Sept
18) presentation by Judge Stephen Ostrach, adjunct faculty member in political
science who also serves as trial court justice in Massachusetts. He addressed
students in the first-year seminar on a subject that is particularly timely, "the difficulty in applying
a fixed Constitution to a changing world."

3. JCU fills 3 key posts in Alumni Relations, Advancement; searches for VP-Advancement
Two graduates from 2004 have joined Alumni Relations in key positions
-- Theresa K. Spada as Alumni and Special Events Coordinator and Rebecca Machusick
as Communications and Young Alumni Coordinator.

"While still a JCU student, Theresa (at left) began working closely with
Rosalie Massey on Reunion," noted Ryan Daly '99, Director of Alumni Relations, "so
she'll 'hit the ground running.' She'll also take responsibility for such special
events such as Homecoming, mini-Reunions and the Alumni Awards Program.

"Becca
Machusick (at right) will be responsible for the communications and marketing
efforts of Alumni Relations," Daly added, "including administration
of the Alumni Relations website and a new online community for alumni. She
also will work to engage current students and young alumni in the life of the
Alumni Association."
In Advancement, Maggie Cretella has been named Director of Corporate and Foundation Relations, creating strategies for the cultivation and solicitation of financial support from corporations and foundations. "Maggie brings a wealth of experience to the job," said Interim Vice President James Noffke. "As a Boston College graduate she appreciates the value of a Jesuit education and as a native of Northeastern Ohio she appreciates the vital role played by JCU."
In addition, with the appointment of Timothy T. Shannon SJ as
Special Assistant to the President, the university has launched a nationwide
search for a Vice President for University Advancement.

4. JCU forges links with Hungary through people, programs
In the wake of the Soviet collapse, Hungary's need to acquire the communications
expertise so vital in a democracy led to creation of the Calasanctius Training
Program to help participants come to the US to attend Catholic colleges, including
JCU. Earlier this summer Mary Beadle, Dean of the Graduate School, visited
Hungary and Romania to meet with 4 Calasanctius students, all alumni of our
master's program in communications management.
Agnes Frehr G'01, David Toth '96, Rita Cebuc G'03 and Tibor Bognar G'05 are pursuing careers in marketing, real estate, journalism and television production, respectively, Dr. Beadle reported. "We're happy they are home and doing what we had hoped, each in his or her own way." Another Calasanctius student currently studying at John Carroll is Zoltan Bugnyar, whom you may remember as the debonaire mixologist at alumni events.
Serendipitously, JCU is commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Hungarian Revolution with an exhibit of art and
photos in the main lobby of Grasselli Library throughout October. Check viewing
times and other info on the JCU
website.

5. Legendary JCU athletic director in national hall of fame
The late Herb Eisele has been inducted this year into the National Association
of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) Hall of Fame. Eisele was an unforgettable
figure at JCU for nearly a quarter century, serving as football coach from
1947-1958 and as athletic director until 1971. The Eisele family was on hand
to accept a plaque commemorating the honor at halftime of the Sept 16 Blue
Streaks football victory over Heidelberg. More info on the NACDA
website.

'94 (soccer), Matt Lenhart (swimming/diving

8. 'But soft -- who goeth on Kulas stage?'
JCU's English Department and the Hopkins Program in British Literature is sponsoring
Actors from the London Stage (AFTLS) performing Shakespeare's Hamlet at
7:30 pm in Kulas Auditorium on November 9, 10, and 11. Thanks to the generous
support of a board member, alumni and friends may purchase tickets at half-price,
online.
For a sampling of the troupe's artistry, listen to segments of Othello,
performed by AFTLS last February on the Kulas stage, on the JCU
website.
